Fair enough .Funny how you get rain shadows.we always think we are in a rain shadow of Haldon .Number of times its raining there then splits either side. Our average is 32 inches .what's yours ?cheers

About 30 to 35in. I always looks/is very dry between Haldan and the Ex estuary.

Count yourself lucky 15/20 inches is our annual total

But you have more soil:)

Up to late last night the Met Office were predicting heavy rain for me today, from 7am to 11am, at 80% probability. Woke up at 7am this morning, looked out, dry as a bone. Had a few spots at various points this morning, that disappeared once it hit the ground. Looks like we might get a few spots more later this afternoon/evening, then thats it. Hopeless.

But don't worry, they definitely know what the temperature will be in 100 years to within a tenth of a degree........................

I have never known such a totally inaccurate forecast as last nights! We rushed to bale and wrap 40 acres of haylage that was 1 day away from making lovely hay as thunderstorms, torrential rain, squally rain and localised flooding were forecast for S Wales at teatime last night. There was even a yellow weather warning!!! Woke this morning to sunny skies and not even a dew. Now have the problem of shifting over 400 wrapped square bales that have to be hauled on trailers 7 miles and stacked without damaging the wrap. The cost incurred of all this will be in the thousands- bloody weather forecasters!!!
Rant over.

The below forecast was what I read . Note the word "could" in the first line and the whole of the last line.
Its all very well blaming forecasters but its old knowledge that a period of hot weather can set off thunderstorms and these are likely to be highly localised.

"Wales could be set for heavy rain and thunderstorms on Friday, the Met Office has warned.

It issued yellow "be aware" rain warnings for much of Wales, saying isolated thunderstorms may develop in the evening.

The Met Office said storms could be severe with torrential downpours and hail a possibility.

But it said there was "large uncertainty" over the areas at risk and many will remain dry."

I have a feeling that under the current conditions no amount of money( or anything else ) will tempt a forecaster to predict exactly where and when any rain will fall let alone how heavy it is.
All they can say is the conditions exist for heavy rain and thunderstorms and my understanding is that is what they are saying.
As far as I know forecasting is about probabilities so even if they think its highly probable a certain event will occur there is a corresponding probability it wont. So by definition really they are going to be wrong sometimes.
Personally I think they do a good job on the whole and considering the geographic position of the UK and its terrain.
