Hitler missed his chance to invade in the summer of 1940. The USA didn't join the war for another 16 months, so it was us who kept them at bay. We had the better air force and navy. Yes the Yanks lent us some old WW1 destroyers but they took many of our overseas bases to pay for them.

Churchill was the greatest ever Brit. He was a true hero and without him in 1940, after Dunkirk, we would have lost and sued Germany for peace. That is what many top politicians wanted to do including Halifax who nearly became PM instead of Churchill. We would all be speaking German now without Winston and I don't reckon we would have the freedom to discuss things on websites. Winston Churchill...the greatest of the great.

I'm not sure about all this extended history lesson navel gazing stuff.
Lets talk about the Empire as well for good measure, and ruling the waves before that.

Are we not about to downgrade somewhat in the world pecking order at the end of the month?

Spoilsport!:) I was really enjoying picturing Mark Francois getting ever-more red in the face with pride and passion reading all that guff. (Though maybe some will pick up on the Imperial stuff as well - playing bowls while the enemy approached...

How Ironic .. the same old rhetoric about the British Empire only to find the EU bureacrats & MEPs are creating a European Empire.

Verhofstad specifically stated this was their goal at the Liberal conference .. and the Liberals applauded hugely in response.

Along come the hypocrites stating the reverse whilst supporting the opposite.

Will you be voting Lib Dem’s when the election finally comes?

Most successful people are lucky and often get help in the nick of time there are the arrogant among us who think success is all down to being great, Not aware of which camp Churchill was in but would suspect he knew it could have gone the other way hence his "never have so many" speech
Lucky people are often just lucky, I'm prepared to give Churchill that, but I don't believe he was great.

Some seem to think he was great, by your theory that makes them arrogant, I don't think that's really fair.

You are entitled to your opinion, but I respectfully disagree about Churchill.

The Germans were never that serious about invading Britain, and most of their preparations were just a ruse to force the UK to the negotiating table, were Hitler expected some form of peace deal to be agreed. Fortunately Churchill saw it differently.

Perhaps I didnt put it very well, what I meant is some people their own success is down to them being great and not lucky, IMVHO that can make them arrogant, we all need a bit of luck, of course the harder you work the luckier you tend to be

You’ve not mentioned the main thing. A good partner behind you (y). And in the recent film, his wife was what saved him in his darkest hour.

Yes having a supportive partner is hugely important, not seen the film but am wary of anything portrayed infilms, I spent three hours in the cabinet war rooms a few years ago which was fascinating and would recommend a visit, WC certainly had a few issues and made a few mistakes, but then dont we all, compared to the buffouns we have in politics world wide now he ws head and shoulders above them

"I spent three hours in the cabinet war rooms a few years ago"...... "WC certainly had a few issues" Oh my lord, that must have been awful for you! Hope the plumbing is improved now or I shall never go and visit.

He was a great orator. I don’t buy into the idea that one leader should get the praise for everything achieved during his term in power, but Churchill did an amazing job of lifting the national spirit, and keeping the government of the time working through adversity. Even if he was a mean old drunk. :)
