Thieves monitoring social media to target farm machinery

Obvious to some, but unfortunately not obvious to all.

Whether it's farming, or any business or personal social media - personal security (or "persec") should be applied. If you walk down the street showing off your shiney gold watch or the latest mobile phone, expect to get mugged.

Post photos on social media of your car, 99" TV cum coffee-maker, don't be surprised if someone turns up with a swag bag.

Same goes for agricultural equipment... do you really NEED to show the world what you have (to be taken)?

Quite agree , new tractors new quads , quads for sale etc with a name attached is an arrow over your address , plus the new toy thread on here not helping much either if there are many caravan dwellers on here taking a look
I reckon a notable percent of our local facebook crime alert group are the perpetrators of the crimes! Why else would someone, often with only lurcher pictures showing on their profile, living 100 miles away give a hoot about crime occurring in rural Shropshire.

Doesn’t really matter what security you have either

Your security can matter, if its done right. Most people, from all walks of life/businesses, buy security products and services without really knowing what they're doing with it, and no proper system in place - which makes it all quite ineffective and a waste of time and money a lot of the time.

On the "flip side", we hope trading standards HMRC , Police and Insurance agencies etc etc are watching also along with relevant software, tracking ,apps etc to monitor known and not yet known culprits too.

Security systems may be a deterrent, but will never prevent theft,
A ring of steel round every item or building, but then that’s not-normally impossible,
Plus if a security system is place, you need the police to respond, and that’s unlikely to happen,

If they want it, they will take it, !!

You're quite right. It has to be a systematic approach; starting from the local community, right down to the physical measures securing your equipment, and as you say - the all important police response. But that too has to be worked on to some extent, creating a proactive working relationship before an incident, and not waiting until something goes wrong.

Proactive working relationship, with the police,
Now you are having a laugh,
All they are interested in is giving you a crime no, for the insurance,
Ps, must be my turn soon, not had anything nicked or broken into lately,

Unfortunately, that is another sad truth.

Things are slowly changing, and some forces are improving as rural crime is creeping up the politics agenda, which then gets passed down the chain to the police.

It depends how concerned and motivated you are, but you can still do your bit locally, arrange for them to visit your property, arrange for meetings with the police and farmers/concerned local community to discuss issues. Get to know them, and let them get to know you. It can be surprising how that can make a difference.

When I do get an alarm system I will ask for advice on here and probably fit it myself with a mate of mine who's clued up. I would think the laser beams running across wide openings around the farmyard would be my first cost effective choice?

How does/will the alarm fit in to your overall security system? Is it your 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc. layer of protection?

What happens next, when your alarm goes off?
