We live three miles from a bombing range and we found this in a daffodil field and it happened to be in the most expensive variety we grow . It had obviously been through a power harrow so son picked it up and put it on some bare ground it was solid steel . We rang it in, police were there in 15 mins and guarded it till the bomb squad got to it and they blew it up where it was , shuck the farm buildings a quarter of a mile away . It was only the end of a practice bomb

Regularly closed Bardney beet factory with them in the 80’s. A relative took one to school once and got it taken off him, then he told the policeman I had loads and they came looking for me to remove them. I showed them my stash and the one we had put through the bandsaw to show it was just the cast lump at the front to make it drop.
Pleased I kept them as I found out in recent years that mine were dropped on a particular practice ground under the supervision of a future Dambuster.

When we were kids, we used to explore the old Ashley Walk bombing range on our bikes. It was a big area of heathland in the North of the New Forest. There were still the shattered remains of the Upkeep bouncing bombs lying on the ground, and the concrete centres of the trial bombs can still be seen sitting in a pile by a track, where they were left after the clear up as the war was ending. 617 Squadron also tested Highball, Tallboy and Grand Slam bombs there and some of the remaining craters are huge.

Any pics?

This is a full rendition, not mine though. The bit we find is the cast iron weight at the front. Hoop no’ 1 holds it in the bomb rack, hoop no’2 prevents the brass plunger at the front from accidentally being knocked in, this loop would be fixed by a wire to the rack, pulling the pin out as it dropped. The centre section carried the flash and smoke charge, never found these as they tended to melt away, and only found a couple of tail fins as they’re quite thin and probably rusted away. Next time I’m in the yard where they’re stashed, I’ll get a picture.

Kids nowadays have no idea how fun the old days were. The ones that survived to adulthood have great stories fir grand kids. What has this generation got to brag about when video games are filling so much of their time and parent can’t let kids out of their sight thru fear of being branded a bad parent or having The kids visited by the local pervert.

Just think of all the things farmers have lost in fields, I bet if somebody lost their virginity in a field some farmer would find it and return it to the owner.;)
