Having a bit of a friendly argument with a mate on Farcebook about one of those observational puzzles. View attachment 555916

Now the bottom line is translated to 2+3+3x11, it's all to do with looking closely at the images, the clock is at 2, the bananas now are in bunches of 3 and the geometric shapes now have 11 sides.
Delving into the years and remembering the BODMAS rule it comes to 38 but my mate was adamant it was 88. I said due to the maths rule which a calculator will do automatically it's 38 so he tried it with the calculator on his computer, the microsoft one and it gave him his answer! That prompted me to have a look and if you use the basic calculator you get the 88 but if you use the scientific one it gives 38!
This might be a bloody good test to give your accountant to find out whether he's going to be working for you or himself ;)
When I was at school it would have come to 88 but for some reason (USA influence maybe) it comes to 38 these days.
Just a recipe for complete and utter cockups imo.

Just the opposite for me, my maths master would have had my guts for garters! He started drumming BODMAS down our 11 year old necks on our first day at grammar school and only let up when he let us discover the "joys" of algebra!

It puzzles me what went on back then as we are both the same age yet were taught different systems. I got a grade A in O level maths so I did manage something.
Until maybe 2 years ago I had never even been aware of the BODMAS system. I can't be the only one.

I know, the friend that I was having the friendly argument with is a few years older than me and he had never come across the rule, my ex-wife hadn't either and then my 16 year old son who has just gone through his GCSE's knows all about the rule. I should hope so too as he's off to sixth form college in September to do A levels in maths, physics and german ;)

I arrived at our local Ford dealer to pick up our car, we were told the keys had been locked in it. We went to the Service Department and found a mechanic working feverishly to unlock the Driver's door. As I watched from the passenger side, I instinctively tried the door-handle and discovered that it was unlocked. 'Hey,' I announced to the Fitter/Mechanic, 'it's open!'
His reply: 'I know. I already did that side.

True story: I know a guy who worked with his dad as a smallscale builder. They had a Transit van and for whatever reason his dad had the habit of pushing the button down and closing the door to lock it rather than using the key.
Of course he was forever locking the keys in and than having to go through the pallaver of getting the doors unlocked again.#
One day he pulls up on the drive after a long day gets out, pushes the button down and closes the door locking the keys in.
Starts ranting, walks round to the passenger side where his son was still sitting, opened his door, picked up the hammer off the passenger footwell, walks round to the drivers side and smashes the window.

Now that really does belong in the WTF thread. :D

A bit like the old boy who turned up to market with his left hand all bandaged up and when asked told how he tried to shut a barn door in the wind which slammed shut and took his fingers off. He was asked did the doctors sew them back on? He regretfully replied that he hadn't thought at the time to pick them up so lost out. A few weeks later he appeared with his other hand bandaged up as well, another windy night with the bloody barn door. When asked about whether they'd managed to sew those fingers back on he replied, "How the feck could I pick them up?"
