This industry has a tragic safety record, what can we all do that may improve this ?

lets use this thread for suggestions ? some maybe unpopular with others (I know mine will be !) but surely we can’t continue watching so many loose their life’s trying to produce a bit of food

my top 3 suggestions

1) no dogs in cabs ....... ever

2) ban big bags or at the very least any reuse of them

3) mandatory at least 1 day off per week, cap maximum working hours over a 48hr period

as I say I know the above would not be popular with all but if even 1 life is saved ....... all create challenges but I’m sure there are solutions

other suggestions please ?

I'd add always put your phone in your pocket when leaving the cab.

A safety switch to prevent PTO turning when no one is in the seat, I know it will cause howls of outrage , but I know of two deaths from it.
Our 2 newest tractors have exactly this. You have to manually press another button to stop it switching off. It can’t be completely safety stop becuase of things like feed wagons and sprayers that need running with nobody present.

Our new Holland's have this, although when filling the feeder wagon you need it mixing whilst feeding it has a seperate button that allows you to be off the seat and pto too turn.

Stop employing 16 years olds and giving them a 50k fendt and 20 ton trailer to go and kill someone in a car.

But the majority of accidents is down to money.

Farmers cant afford to employ someone else so they work longer hours instead.
They cant afford to spend thousands to repair a roof on a shed so they have a go themselves.
They cant afford good handling facilities for livestock, so try and manage with what they have and get killed.
The list could go on forever.

I cant think of another industry where you can have millions of pounds worth of kit and land, and barely break even every year. I dont think anything will ever change untill we get a fair price for things.
