Things to look for on used chaviot

thinking about 10-17k depending on age condition etc, the lower the better but obviously would rather pay a little more for a machine that has plenty of life left in it and not done as much work.

looked at a couple of hi-lo's but the ones I have seen have done a lot of work (most 10,000 hrs or more) and have quite often seen a lot of liquid fert which has started to eat everything. Also looked at a househam sprint but again its finding an older machine that still has plenty of life and wont need new wheel motors costing big bucks straight away

Not sure what they're asking for it but my old one is going to househams. Was in classifieds here. Not sure of your workload but maybe worth a look. Would do someone a turn.

We went from an old Chaviot to a HiLo. HiLo cost us £11000 with about 6000 hours on the clock 10 years ago. We had to renew all steering bearing and bushes including king pin bushes to get the four wheel steering back on track. We have also welded in new tank frame members and fitted a new tank, renewed all pneumatic controls piping a few solenoids and other bits and pieces. Ours has a deutz air cooled engine which still goes alright but does not start well in the cold, possibly because of the drag on it from the pumps, compressor etc.

The HiLo is 24m holds 2000 litres and is not that fast on the road. Lucky to hit 20 mph. I can spray 200 acres a day going back to Central yard to fill. A wheel motor cost us £1600 a couple of years ago. No suspension so it bangs about a bit when the tramlines are rock hard.

To be honest, the Chaviot was smoother to drive as it had front end suspension and could reach the same speed as the HiLo with narrow wheels on the road.
The Chaviot we had only held 800l had a 12 m boom and manual gearbox. Actually I quite liked it as it felt light and nippy compared to the somewhat lumbering Bateman. And although the Bateman sprayed twice the width, I would say it ran down twice the amount of grain so no gain there.

I'd go for a Chaviot if I were you. Ours was only 2 WD so struggled if it was really wet. If it's really wet the Bateman, or any other sprayer might keep going longer but will still make a hell of a mess.

Bateman wins on desiccating oilseed rape or late Foliar feed on rape. Chaviot just not enough underbelly clearance.

We used to have a Chaviot 2000 manual gearbox. Very good lightweight machine. The only trouble we had in 6 years was the cam belt broke in the discovery engine and bent the valves. Apparently a common fault in these engines. Also if the ground is very wet they are tricky to steer round corners being 2 wheel drive.

if you are found wanting on the 540's then it is a case of you should not be there :)
Another question sorry , who do you get to test your sprayer , have j Rhodes for our old sprayer but thinking as your not far away and it seems there are still a few chaviots in your area it might pay us to have the same bloke to ours as the test has just gone out , thanks , rob

we used this company some years ago, had a service exchange
thanks, I've been told that the auto gearboxes come out of a 24T Chrysler truck & there is a company in Herts which specialises in them. Just curious in case ours goes!!
