Thinking of getting an FE35

I have been offered an FE35 with the following known faults.
Hydraulics not working.
Engine starts but needs easy start until warmed up.
Ignition switch works sometimes other times you have to short starter
Tyres are OK but not special

My questions is and I know without seeing it you can only approximate but what would a fair price be

thanks

Get it bought!

This was in the nettles. It Did start and run but was rough, did the engine up, new hydraulic pump, plus a few new cosmetic items.

£200 for engine overhaul kit.
£160 for hydraulic pump.

You'll have a great time doing it up!

Not true

There are folk out there who can get them to start as easy as most other tractors. The secret is precision, accuracy and good quality parts.

They are an engine that can’t be scrimped on (from experience) however if done right they are good going engines
They're a better tractor than the 3cyl
A bit longer run smoother and pull really well

Once set up correctly had a few that would start without heat granted not all that is a few have had to have heat but still

I welcome the challenge of getting it to start on the button without resorting to Easy Start
Providing timing is correct, injector pump is ok and injectors are serviced and compression is ok I see not reason why it should not start.
If valves and seats are OK and pistons and rings are good I see no reason why the compression should no be good.
Time will tell

I agree with you, but most 4 cylinder 35's are hard to start.
Unless we got all the bad ones?
For light tipping about you need an easy starting engine.
The timing chain isn't ideal on a tractor engine, the starter turns it over to slow, low compression pressures, indirect injection, oddball engine arrangement to strip out the bottom end. Wiring can be easily sorted, so don't stress about that .......

Granted all these things can be ironed out at a price ...........................
Best of luck with it and at around a grand, might, just might be worth a punt.

there is a local guy that will guarantee that MF 35 4cyl will start immediately without heat and is done by filling piston chambers with weld
don't pay too much for tractor

i have just phoned guy who makes them start good and he says they would never start even when brand new... he said the local dealer supplied a tin of easy start when delivered to farm if the engine is overhauled there is good chance it will still not start, he said that he welds top of pistons and does other things which he would not disclose!! but he did say another way of getting it to start good is to drill and tap head and fit glow plugs .. this was done to the Allis Chalmers ED40 same engine but not to the MF 35 ... finally he said be careful when buying engine parts because some are better than others

We put a sparex engine kit in one last year. We took our time fitting new timing chain and tensioner , piston and liners rebuilt head and injectors.
We also made the holes in the combustion chamber larger and rebuilt the starter motor. Before we started work on the tractor we towed it about 1/4 a mile to get it to start chuffing white smoke like a steam train. After rebuild it would start instantly. One of the boys rebuilt the starter and said it wasn't the original but was off a ford with a higher KW rating . I Wouldn't have noticed as the tractor had been resprayed a couple of years ago.
Pay attention to the timing arrangement and injection pump drive. This need to be shimmed correctly for accurate timing.
We had some very bad weather a couple of weeks after doing the tractor up . -9 and it would start with 30 secs of heat
