Third primary Covid jab for immunosuppressed (NOT booster)

For those that have probably not developed antibodies in response to the first 2 doses (about 500,000 of us apparently).

Just interested to hear from anyone else who is eligible for this, and if they have heard anything yet? Supposed to get a letter from your GP (according to my rheumatologist).

Seems like a bit of a cock up.

NHS England issued new guidance to hospital trusts on 30 September, with instructions that action be taken immediately to contact all those eligible for their third dose by 11 October.
These will be recorded as a "booster" shot until the national system can be updated to recognise third "primary" doses. This will ensure immunosuppressed patients can then be contacted again in six months for their booster fourth dose.

Yup, those of us who are supposed to be receiving it can verify it's a cock-up. Can't book it ourselves or through 119, has to be with letter from GP which I assume I can then go to a drop-in vaccination centre with. My GP said phone 119. Told them that doesn't work. Didn't seem to know anything about it. I sent them a copy of the letters that are supposed to have gone to all GP practices and consultants telling them what they are supposed to do. 'Oh. We will pass this onto our Covid team.' Doesn't help when some are referring to the third primary jab as a booster. It's not. We have no antibodies to boost.

Which vaccine have you had for your first two jags?

Acting on medical advice. Some people will be stopping their meds or having it when they are on a low dose. Mine is constant. There are some trials in the States ongoing to see what happens when some people stop their meds, but they are not reporting back until next year. Had Pfizer first two.

I see the recommendation in the US would be for a 3rd Pfizer dose in your case. With between 42-48% of people with no or low antibody response from the initial doses getting some level response after the third dose. Do they use something like the Roche antibody test when they diagnose your lack of antibodies?

Most of us have not had an antibody test but I happened to have two through involvement with another trial, one was Fortress, can't remember what the other one was. The third jab is recommended to about 500,000 people in UK based either on illness or medication (or both) following the OCTAVE research findings.

OH is involved in this kerfuffle. It would seem that your consultant needs to inform your GP in the first instance...... one assumes that in order to be in this category you will have a consultant. But. The consultants are asking for a booster for thier patient and gp's are refusing probably because of the 'booster' terminology and a different term should be used which is not recognised by the nhs.

the OH had a full course of AstraZeneca vaccine but it would seem they want to do a third primary of Pfizer if it happens. I have several problems with this. The first being that I don't like what I have heard about the Pfizer drug especially and that one dose (however large...... booster seems to be 1/2 dose, primary appears to be a full dose twice for the whole course) will not provide cover for a vaccine different to the initial vaccine. Don't know if that makes sense but essentially a single dose of a different vaccine won't give cover unless you get a second.

I know three people who have been pinged so far today for booster jabs, all either fall in the clinically vulnerable or key worker categories.

That might make sense... I have been emailled offering a Booster.... but as it is not yet 6 months since I had my 2nd jab I can't book it and nor can 119 :banghead: :banghead:

but they would probably be 6 month vaccinated by now so that would be expected. Most of the NHS workers I know have been having their boosters as they are 6 months on.

Well, got my 3rd primary jab today but only because I persisted and eventually got past the ring of steel at my GP surgery. Managed to have a phone conversation with a medical student there yesterday and a letter from my GP appeared an hour later. Took it with me to a drop-in vaccination centre at Loughborough today and all done and dusted. They had even heard of the 3rd primary and knew how to record it! Hurrah. Bloody sore arm again though!

Same as you had originally, or have they done a mix? Will you be tested for antibodies prior to a booster?

My wife is due her booster tomorrow but I've just seen this. Her second was in May so the 6 months isn't up yet. Been reading up now and it seems she shouldn't be going yet. She's in a vulnerable group but wasn't called up as soon as we expected early on.

Who decided she is 'due' her booster if it is not 6 months? OR is she severely immunocompromised and therefore getting a third primary, which can be any time after 8 weeks since 2nd jab.

She went this morning and asked, the nurse went for someone more senior who asked if she was on steroids, that is the case and as you suggest she was told that the jab was her third and she would be getting called back for a booster at a later date.
She was just offered her first at the same time as me so it looks like she was missed off the first time round. We expected her to be offered it sooner.
