Thanks for that.
Shame, she's only a 4th calver and I'd hoped to get a pure heifer from her next time.
She has 2 crossbred daughters in the herd and is due herself in a couple of weeks.
Oh well. she's my only pure Lim left.
The cow I was talking about in the link is now culled, the corkscrew claw came through in a granddaughter too. Save yourself the hassle and disappointment and cull now.

Feel for you - seems to me every time we get the herd in - we want to cull another. We'll be down to nil stock soon. Raise the calf and get rid.

Im the same. So ive had to start trimming feet and keeping heifers from cows that dont have bad feet or some other problem and fattening the heifers from problem ciws. Now im running out of cows i can breed heifers from :banghead::banghead::banghead:

There’s a lot spoken about suckler herd profitability. Poor feet in a herd must have a significant financial impact but not much seems to be said about it.
There’s nothing wrong with this cow apart from wonky outer claws on her back feet and she’s had 3 super calves. She’ll do well as a cull but I had expected her to go on to have 8-10 calves in a long trouble free lifetime.

Does anyone know how to quantify the cost of having to cull her early?

No place in the suckler herd for any cow that needs it's feet looked at at any stage during it's lifetime in my view. Only ever had one and she had too much barley over her first winter, she ate well, particularly on the BBQ!

Would that not be laminitis induced defect then, founder, not hereditary, simply the fault of whoever fed her. Dont mean that in a finger pointing way.

I have 1 particular cow that we trim at least 1ce per year sometimes twice I don't keep replacements but definitely wouldn't off her, I just accept she has a higher running cost than other cows in herd but at £15? per trim I don't think it makes that much difference to her profitability, helps that she has a stonking double muscled calf most years!

re culling early, be a bit ruthless they make more younger don't keep something too long and either pay for it to go or have to go direct to slaughterhouse rather than through market for maximum market value?

As long as you dont mind trimming her feet every now and again theres nothing stopping you keeping her as a commercial cow just dont keep any of her progeny as breeders!! A pure lim cow x with a bb bull youll get some topping comercial calves

Well you are not going to cull her now so get her feet done after she calves and see how she goes till she is due to see the bull again

Oh, henarar, yes I am going to cull her.
I have to keep costs down to a very minimum and I wouldn't get her feet trimmed for 15 quid!!
I'll keep her lovely daughters though and if the one inside her is a heifer I'll keep that too if all goes well.
