I am sure all of us who have ever had a difficult calving were sitting on the edge of our seats, as I was, urging them all on. Very good television.
Well he was trying to rope the first one from the other side of the wall.good program......but i cannot for the life of me understand why they don't carry a stick when driving their stock, or going in a pen with a new calved cow.
Iffy? I reckon it was shot. I noticed it when they pulled the first calf, she was in the background all the time. She must throw some cracking calves to keep her round with no calf and a bag like that.mothers bag looked a bit iffy.
Its a good programme, you can clearly see the grain was undersown, hence the hurry to get it cut.The Irvines (limousin) farm about 4 miles up the road from here. We were on the same estate as them till we bought.
They keep good Limousins and do well with them.
I did wonder for a minute if the calving was being "built up" for the camera, but it did seem real when they were at it.
Drummuir isn't really a grain area, most folk have some barley in the rotation to renew grass Leys, provide some feed and straw and sell any surplus. I would just about guarantee that grain was undersown, that would be the most common way of establishing grass here abouts.
I thought all the farms have come over very well and as said it's nice to see some realism farming.
the message is she is an old girl thats reared a lot of calves and had hell knocked out of her udder over the years and she has obviously produced some good calves in the past or they would not have kept her so long i think it is brave and commendable that they let them film there, would you like the cameras filming ?She'd have been long gone out of here, and we are far from pedigree. What kind of message does it give to potential customers? My father was watching the calving and said, I think we'll stick with the stabilisers. I don't think he misses messing with big calves
It's also an advert for his cattle, which look on the most part very good. If I had a cow with a bag like that that had a dead calf she would be gone. That's what I'm saying. And as a commercial farmer I wouldn't want to breed out of that bull. But yes fair play for showing it as it is to all the farmers.the message is she is an old girl thats reared a lot of calves and had hell knocked out of her udder over the years and she has obviously produced some good calves in the past or they would not have kept her so long i think it is brave and commendable that they let them film there, would you like the cameras filming ?
I don't think the size of calf was all the bull's fault. The cow wasn't suckling a calf all summer and was done too well. She got fat and put a lot into the next calf........ And as a commercial farmer I wouldn't want to breed out of that bull......
And no I don't think I'd have a film crew here, not enough drama I'd think.
Its a good programme, you can clearly see the grain was undersown, hence the hurry to get it cut.
Good to see a £20k combine at work rather than £200k.
Its very brave of the families to put themselves in the public eye to show real farming with its struggles and rewards.
Some do easily , some dont. What I want to know is can a tup really earn back the 40k guineas it cost??
Some will do it 4 and 5 times over others will just be a big insurance bill !!!What I want to know is can a tup really earn back the 40k guineas it cost??
