This pick up?

Awful design, brilliant concept. Anyone mocking the idea of an electric pick-up doesn't know what they're talking about. More torque, more power, less to go wrong, cheaper over all, easier to fix and ever so green. I am absolutely certain that the next new* pick-up I buy, before 2030, will be electric.

*Used, if I can get it, but I think that less likely by then.

Most farm pickups do less that 200 miles a day and many farms have a 100 amp electric supply so could use a fast charger
This is it, and most farms have sheds that could / already have PV panels, free power...!

Clearly, there will be times when there is a longer drive or towing, but the longest journey from here with a full trailer is and eighty mile round trip, that just won't be a problem. As for really long journeys, people complaining about the range of electric vehicles seem to ignore that we stop for food and toilets, and that all 'guidance' from the motoring org's and gov't advises stops every so often too.

And, anyway, this is all to do with the current generation of electric vehicles; the Tesla Model 3 has become several percent more efficient several times already, merely by software updates that better use the same hardware!

In ten years time electric vehicles will all be far, far better than even the absolute best one available now. :)

Maybe so, but a lot also get the occasional trip out a lot further too, or with a trailer on. I would expect the range to be a fraction of that once you stick 3.5t of livestock trailer behind it (I'm assuming it has a decent towing capacity, of course).

See below...

3.35t towing according to web site
Yep, and that will get better too. 3.5t is great, and I'm sure some people use that max. capacity (and more...), but I don't really get that close to it very often and - chatting about the latest generation of pick-ups with some neighbours earlier this year - not many others do either. Off the top of my head, I'm easily a safe 100-200kg under with a typical load, more so bearing in mind the next paragraph.

I've got an IW 12' trailer, I don't keep the decks in all the time because I don't use them that often, ditto the full size door / divider, and if it isn't needed it doesn't go on the front either, it stays in the yard. Just taking away that door, or the decks if I'm moving cattle, and carrying the spare wheel in the pick-up means something like 100kg+ not being towed - and that makes a real difference.

Again, all this is about the current generation of electric pick-up, they'll get better and better.

That's when you take the trailer and genny......Top Gear were onto something with the Hammerhead Eagle i-thrust.

Fraction, yes - but a pretty big fraction quite close to 1/1. Ask yourself how much your current mpg drops when you tow, them add back a bit for the enhanced regen braking - I’d guess maybe a 10-20% drop in range at most.

Factor in a tea break at a charge point, and you’re going to be grand for any genuine farm journeys.
