Thunderstorms

Last time we had warnings (couple of weeks ago) everyone was dreading it due to s.barley etc ready to fall down. Anyhow went to bed expecting to wake up to a massive storm but no, nothing. Turned into a lovely sunny day without a drop. Hope Saturdays the same.

Yes, got rape sat here at 14%, two fields will go, suspect would rather have the junk in the shed than shed out on the floor due to hail, may fire the drier up (look for a cloud of smoke, when it self combusts shortly!)

Hope we don,t get it as last bit of rape (40 acres ) needs another few days to be fit .Just off to bale 40 acres of hay this afternoon hope that is fit .

Direct. It's been sprayed 10 days and could perhaps do with a bit longer but it won't take too long for it to be below 9 so going to keep going!

Just come back from farm a heck of a downpour for half an hour, come back home only over the hill, all is dry.

i'm trying to get my OSR cut before this happens, could do with a few more days really, its cutting dry but still some green in the stalks make harder work of it than it need be. After loosing 115ac in a 10min hail storm 2 years ago I'm not risking it !

Got into it, 9%, could do with another few days really but its coming off (well that bit that is ready anyway) pretty pleased with what we've done so far, very light brash, Extrovert doing 1.4-1.6t/ac, doesn't look anything special mind and never did all year. This is via the combine weigher that isn't far out but for brash am happy, won't make any money mind but hey could be worse.

No. I looked at it a couple of times over the years. The risk of a crop write off was about 1 in 20 according to our broker, so the premium was 1/15th of the crops' value. Thought we'd self insure after that.

We insured for a while after the neighbour lost it all. But now we don't. If we think there is a serious risk of getting knocked out we combine a bit earlier than ideal and dry it. Ours was fairly crisp and brittle when the heavens opened last Saturday. Didn't knock any out but it wasn't hail.

Does anybody else insure their crops we have done the last few years after a few close calls and neighbours losing rape to hail. Had a small claim last year.

Please can you explain how crop insurance (especially on OSR) works/premiums calculated . From what you say crop does not have to be a complete write of before you can make a claim. No longer farming but interested ,as Rape very susceptible to the "Great White Combine" (hail stones),especially in Canada, quite common to have rape/canola crop wiped out by hail storms.
I think that is why they still windrow in a big way.
