Thanks, I have heard of John Conaty but never bought anything from him.
I did some more research myself and its all point to the same cause --- fecked plates/pack/whatever.
This amateur was never any good at jigsaws, how can I possibly put all these rings back in the right order or does the order matter!
Does anyone have an exploded view diagram from a Thwaites manual of the torque converter & gearbox ?

if you can’t do a jigsaw let someone else do it.

Plant and Engineering do service exchange transmissions for them, they do all the parts too. You can speak to a mechanic too if you ask them. I get my dumper and roller parts with them. They tidy and helpful

These guys in Devon?

There’s also David Cornwallis in Leominster

However I think the OP is leaning toward a DIY job, as the cost of getting someone at workshop rates probably wouldn’t wash its face for a v lightly used machine.

I just sent them an email to check out what an exchange unit or refurbishment would cost.
From previous comments it is unlikely to be less that the £3k mentioned.
At that price I would take it off myself, buy the parts and get a local mechanic to come out or take it to him and observer how to do it.
I presume the water only damage the clutch plates and I only need to fix them ?
The torque unit should not be affect ?

I also sent the same email to David Cornwallis and got an immediate response (21:39) asking for the number off the top of the transmission.

See attached service manual from an early 90's 2CX. This is basically the same synchro shuttle box as in your dumper (think its an SS 400 model box in the 2CX) less the power-take-off drive for the compressor obviously.

The transmission section F has all you need to know, on how these SS boxes are laid out internally, how the hydraulic circuits work, and how too get them tested, apart etc.

Note that removal and replacement instructions are towards the end of the section after the front/rear axles sections, so easy to miss.

Edit: Have extracted just the synchro shuttle trans. stuff in the attachment below, for ease of reading. The full 2CX service manual is in the hyperlink above (too big to post a full copy here)

Did you manage to ID the box?

it will be at least Sunday before I can around to it.
Interestingly how ease it can be to get info on russian web sites.
I got similar docs a long time ago for a rexton 2.7d.
Why are people not entitled to these documents from Thwaites?

where should I search for this?
You may or may not find the right Thwaites service manual or even for the right generation /age of machine. Dumpers are a bit hit and miss.

Other stuff like JCB construction and Case is generally far more comprehensively covered and you can usually get the exact one you’re looking for.

You don’t have to look too hard to find JCB service manuals online for a tenner for a machine or indeed the whole family of machines for not too much more.

Genuine service / workshop manuals can easily run to hundreds
