Thwaites dumper stalls

as far as I can see there is no separate oil cooler, there is a 3" (outer diameter) coming down from the water pump to a metal pipe that runs under the radiator and connects to rad at the right left hand side.
The oil pipes are connected to this metal pipe, one at each end so its very likely that @lexion780tt is correct
when he says heat exchanger.
The attache pic is taken looking up under the water pump and u can see the 3 inch pipe (now painted yellow).
If you look carefully u can just about see where one of the oil pipe connects to the metal pipe under the rad.

Sounds to me like the transmission is knackered and due an overhaul plus a new transmission oil cooler. All common JCB stuff.
Probably just as cheap to move it on and find another that works IMO!
If it was knackered packs, out of interest how much approx. would a customer be looking at for replacement?

As you say you can pick up used 6T dumpers pretty cheap and it may be uneconomic to repair it unless @Amateur could do it at zero labour cost/himself/mates rates.

That metal pipe with the 3 inch hoses and transmission oil pipes connected to it is the oil cooler/heat exchanger. They are basically the same thing.

To pay someone else to overhaul it once it's out of machine. With new seals new clutch packs. New oil pump and recon converter plus almost certainly new pistons and thrust washer kits to replace the plastic types. Be at least 2k.
Bit more if you find the bearings spun and it needs boring and sleeving which is also quite common.

I dont do them I pay someone else.

Thanks for that. Food for thought for the OP, but it’s looking increasingly like it’s the problem....

Not a chance the wheels + tyres alone are worth that. How much is a new tyre for a dumper (14.5 x 20) in the UK ?
As I have done all I want with it this yer I am in no rush I can easily do this during the winter.
The delusion of brexit must be affecting your judgement here!!!!
By shipping date import duties of 25% from EU countries will apply!!

Drain oil and refill with some atf right to the top of gearbox let it soak into all the plates over night drain refill to proper level and then try it what have you got to loose?

@supercow thanks for the offer, I am in southern Ireland, I will first try to get an exchange unit from a breaker here.
I would have to be sure the transmission & gearbox were working before embarking on a trip to Dumfriesshire.
What year is your Dumper ? Are the rims 5 stud ?

I will first drain the oil and examine it for water contamination, then I will try @lexion780tt idea of " refill with some atf right to the top of gearbox let it soak into all the plates over night drain refill to proper level and then try it " and by pass the heat exchanger by connecting the pipes together. If this works then I can sort the radiator later with a separate oil cooler mounted at the back.

a coupe of people mentioned wiring diagrams here, just in case someone needs one, here is a 5 ton diagram, from what I can see it is identical to my 6 ton.

Similar ‘box, same trouble. Interesting tear down photos if you look through his photobucket collection....

!

Dealer parts prices from Meath, to give you some rough idea...need to check for your model. Plate ID should be on the side of the box or speak to your local plant dealer.

Oil cooler:

Shuttle reverse repair kit:

New piston:

If the plates in the pack are fecked, they’ll be fecked. No amount of oil will magic them back to life. If you decide on overfilling it, measure what you put in...and then drain out again.

You don’t want to inadvertently leave it overfilled (or in the torque converter)...and cause yourself more grief.

Thanks, I have heard of John Conaty but never bought anything from him.
I did some more research myself and its all point to the same cause --- fecked plates/pack/whatever.
This amateur was never any good at jigsaws, how can I possibly put all these rings back in the right order or does the order matter!
Does anyone have an exploded view diagram from a Thwaites manual of the torque converter & gearbox ?
