Time to say goodbye to my old vaddy

So my trusty old Vaddy 400 p is nearing retirement ,,, but what to change it for , certainly not going to do anything rash till we find out if the euro idiots decide if they are going to ban glypho ..... Rape is planted with the trio and have no intention of changing direction there, so basicly it's to plant wheat , barley , linseed and beans possibly , I also have at my disposal a weaving 6 m tine drill which is within a agreement with my neighbour who I do a lot of his work including his drilling . We brought the weaving out this autumn when we felt it was a bit to wet for the Vaddy at the beginning of drilling but have to say that on the marl we have been very disapointed with the establishment ,,,, basicly I think it's seed to soil contact even tho it was all rolled ,,,, decent ground it was okay ,,,,,
Cultivations have changed as well with BG now an issue , used to trio behind the combine and then leave till drilling to see if if we would drill straight into trioed land or if it would need knocking down ,,,,,, now we mostly knock the trioing down with a cultipress to be in a better condition for a BG chit ,,,,, so quite often a rapid can be OTT .
Lots of thought and ideas ,
If glypho gets banned will possibly end up ploughing , if that's the case might build a combi drill built around a rubber tracked crawler ,

I would buy another vaddy.
You got all the other options covered.
You know it works , you can crack on with them. Combis are good just less output .
Or..........

Few folk using them with only the drilling discs in play.
Leaving the cultivating element out of work, so as to drill into a well prepared seedbed with less disturbance for better bg control.

The old vaddy has done some work , frame is cracking up and she needs new discs and counters ,,,,,, might consider a wider machine and only use the drilling element ,,,,, was also pondering what else is on the market

I do like the seed to soil consolidation that the rapid brings to the party

750a ? I know everyone thinks it’s a Direct drill but it can do everything a vaddy can on min till and even pressed plough situation. But with less disturbance of your stale seedbed which should be a big consideration with black grass ?

You also have the ability to zerotill in seasons or situations that you feel allow (after beans or linseed maybe ?)

Last time I looked cheaper than a rapid as well ? And lower hp requirement ?

I like the vaddy. Although not a 750a, it will go straight in using the coulters only. Ours has been really good this year. Like a Chafer sprayer, you know its going to have some decent residual value too.

Vaddy without a doubt very versatile drill ,we were panicking this year that it was too wet to use it .Now i accept that it did dry up alot halfway through our campaign but everything including the stuff drilled into some into very wet heavy clay soils looks great and we are very happy with it Plus very little slug damage

+1 for the Vaddy...... I had one of the very early ones many years ago and it wasn't ideal having to drill headlands first , that and the unstaggered plain tyres! With the advent of GPS and being able to drill headlands last I'd be wary of changing something that works.

We never buy new and rarity means that true DD enthusiasts keep value up ,,,,,,, but we do have a new one a few miles away and I will certainly be having a look at what it has done ,,,,,,, also might give me the option of getting more DD done in the future

There is a used (6m) one at Ellis machinery (not far from you ? ) no idea on price or value though

haha - no, its so we are planting into the headland before we drive all over it turning at the end & it also gives us a good guide where to lift / lower the planter so there isn't too much oversowing or missed gaps at the end

There's whole threads on that subject!! Back on topic I would do as you say and wait until we know what is happening with Glyphosate first.

If I was direct drilling I would also plant my headlands first but for us uncouth yobs who like to destroy his soils with cultivations we find it better to drill the insides first and then lift the headlands with the cultivation aspect of the drill
