If I have to sell overpriced pots of tea and "rural crafts" to biddies to cross-subsidise growing crops then I will be first in the queue to pack in.

I've diversified, but keep both business separate so I know which one is making it pay, neither subsidises the other, but depending on the year will decide which one pays my wages.

Then get your exit plan sorted as I think it’s beginning to happen.

Not saying I agree with it or promoting it, just that I think the writing is on the wall for Uk agriculture for the simple fact the world does not need it. As said earlier this country is totally irrelevant outside of London.

Plough or not I think it’s the end of the road for combinable crops on bad / resistant black grass farms ?

I quite agree with you on this point , I have several neighbours with their backs to the wall and wondering what to do on their heavy clay soils ,,,,. Problem is there isn't a plough out there which will bury all the volunteer / BG in a difficult season on that shite

I wouldn't say it is the end on these farms. Necessity is the mother of all invention. They will either adapt or cease to trade in their current form IMO. When the alternative is forced upon them they will change.

Strip tillage has knocked £6/tonne off my costs of production. Great. BPS is £24/t and Countryside Stewardship mostly makes a net loss unless on really marginal ground!

After having a JD 750a on farm drilling into 10 year HLS grass I was impressed with the way the drill handled the challenge, was interested in the Ellis one, but it does look in need of attention to my untrained eye :scratchhead:

I only walked past it while there for other things but it did look a bit in need of some tlc - guess it depends how it’s priced as they are pretty straight forward to take wear out of

This year ( 1st go at it ) the grass has drilled really well, fingers crossed the W Wheat comes ok and I get a crop, really would like to give the DD a good go on this half of the farm, will be torn on buying a drill as I have a local Farm that contract at a very reasonable price ( well, I think it is ) but did miss doing it myself

I wouldn’t start worrying about glyphosate, subs or anything else disappearing. We live in a capitalist society and I think you’ll find that we’re charged exactly what the market will stand for our inputs ie if the job starts to get unprofitable the inputs will drop. I’m reliably informed that Ag Chems in China are a fraction ( made by the same manufacturers ) of the price we pay. Granted there might be a few hard years whilst the adjustment takes place but those that can run a bit lean over the next few years should come out ok in the end.

Back to the OP ( @Mr Charisma ), get a 750, it’s so much more than just a direct drill, I’ll even book you on an operator’s course.

Shall be paying a visit to a local farm in the next couple of weeks to see how they have got on with their new 750 , and I hope to get them to drill some crops for me to watch next year but I'm not ready to spend big money into a system with out knowing it's going to be the right one for me ,,,,,,, I'm a very cautious man who doesn't like to make big mistakes !!!!!
I may even put new discs and coulters on the old rapid yet just to buy me a couple of years whilst I look into things a bit more

bloody good idea. we are doing this already, keep the vaddy and get a bit of dding done plus can always call a combi contractor in if conditions deteriorate. much cheaper than upgrading vaddy to next size,
