Time to say Goodbye to WhatsApp?

As out beloved Leaders have taken us out of Yurrup, we will now also no longer fall under the protection of the EU data legislation et al. in the near future.

As a result, the news that Facebook, who own WhatsApp, are going to be altering the privacy elements of YOUR agreement with Facebook/WhatsApp whether you like it or not, is a concern.

Anyone here using Signal or Telegram and got any thoughts...? It's looking like the Signal userbase is going to skyrocket in the coming weeks.

Hate Facebook and it's spywares, have moved to signal and trying to encourage others to do the same.

The only software I use from FB is WhatsApp anyway, but with it locked down as much as is possible. The Zuck now needs to know more about.... everyone.

It was inevitable that at some stage they were going to recoup their "investment" when they bought out WhatsApp.

FFS, there are too many platforms already, trying to keep up with mates/ social groups/ the families various sports teams etc on different social media sites has become an utter chore.
I’m almost at the point of deleting the lot and reverting to something called ‘phone calls and text’.

I do totally agree, but on this occasion for me I hate facebook (or identity theftbook as I call it). Now they are using all our phone data, (contacts, txt, gps data everything).
It just annoys me, I think adverts in whatsapp will be the next thing coming.
Signal is a free opensource platform, which the community can check the code and make sure we are not having the rip taken out of us.
If noone stands up for privacy, there will be none left of what little we have.

Nothing to hide here, they can sell my nonsense if they wish.

(I use Telegram for secretive things!)
The point isn't that you as an individual are interesting it is more the potential collation of data across the population

If Text messages were able to allow you to do mpre of what Whatsapp does I would bin it today, but multimedia messages are a pita, and longer texts spread over multiple messages are not great either. Maybe if they sorted that out - then the likes of Whatsapp etc would have no use for many of us oldies 😁

“I sent you the photo/ timetable/ link/ contact/ file (delete as applicable) last week, I think it might have been on messenger, or it might have been on WhatsApp, or text, or e-mail”.

It does get a bit of an issue cross platform, hence why I feel the Text Route has been left behind - because who the hell wants to log into another site to get a phot message when you can get it sent direct on the same platform to your device..

like your post,
I just don't feel I should have to share that said message (and all my other phone data) with every 3rd party company facebook is in bed with.
so for me it's a delete whatsapp time...

Email is best for anything that cannot be dumped after reading - on something like Outlook or Thunderbird, you can file under different headings, back up onto hard disk or removable media. It is also not at the whim of an individual commercial operation.

Saw this earlier on a legal journals website.

"EU and UK users also will remain unaffected by the update, as WhatsApp does not share their data with Facebook overseas."

However, I also read last weekend that the UK exit from Brexit will open us up the full force of US data "protection", which is SFA....

My small bugbear about Signal, is that it is not cross platform as yet. I have used WA on my PC and also my chromebook since day one that it was possible.
