hi folks.

Have been looking at a tm 150 with 9000 hours on it. The tractor is absolutely mint inside and out, all the gears seem to be fine and don't slip on the clutch packs through each gear when tested. The engine doesn't smoke or breathe and all 4 spools work fine. Pto is all good aswell but I'm not firmiliar with the tm range. It's a range command aswell. I know the 155 is supposed to be a bullet proof tractor but just wondered if there was anything to be concerned about with the 150.

Any help would be really appreciated and any other info to check before we hand over money would be good. It's up for 13000 and we know the history and hasn't broke down to date.

Thanks guys

The 155 is just a 150 with an intercooler and cheaper synchros.

I know of several 150's locally that went well over 10k hours with little bother.

Gearbox is usually the biggest bill but this one sounds ok in that dept. listen for a crunch when changing range. that means new synchro time. Exhaust manifold bolts often shear but are easy drilled out and replaced. Engines even with a 10mm spanner remap are all but bullet proof as long as they are serviced regular.

At 9000hrs problems will be inevitable as with anthing. but if it's in good nick it's probably worth spending a bit on. They are a nice place to spend a day. even by new standards.

Yeah I've not driven it down a road yet to listen to the synchro's but will be doing. It's been serviced every 300 hours for engine and every 600 for back end. It's got air on aswell which is a major plus for us. Can the pump be tweeked up slightly for more power then. There are 3 bolts sheared on the manifold which I intend on doing asap if we buy it. Is the 150 a standard exhaust turbo and not cool air aswell?

Yeah, I wouldn't tweet it any way. Will have enough power for what we want it for. Did the tm have an uprated oil cooler for the transmission? They used to get hot on the 175 and 190

It's probably already had the 6mm spanner treatment. A run on a dyno wouldn't do any harm to make sure that it isn't doing 220 at the shaft. Get the exhaust manifold skimmed while it is off and fit all new bolts. At 9000 hours I would budget for getting the head done up, it could drop a valve at any time

Yeah we have budgeted for doing a top end rebuild. I'll bring the dyno home from work to see if it is running fine. Some tractors are going to cost but some won't. It's just bad luck if you get a Friday afternoon tractor.

You know about the manifold bolts, pig of a job but doable!!! How's the pick up hitch? Wear in the pins and bushes eventually allow the hitch to come back up against the hooks rather than ride them, this then forces the hooks in front of the latching pin rather than behind to latch on!!! This usually shears the keyways of the hooks and twists the shaft.

Hook kit available from QTP now anyhow so not end of the world. It's good habit to get into holding the release handle up as you lift the hitch up, not a problem then.

Calibrate the gearbox when warm from time to time, won't do it any harm, worklight fuses like to burn out behind fuse box but easy repaired by bypassing them with new fuses.

Oh yes the pickup hitch. One of mine was getting very sloppy so I took it off and sent it to an engineering company that made it better than new. Cost £600 but well worth it.

its a 150 with cab suspension. No front axle suspension. 2002, 4 spools, front links. I'll check the hitch for play and wear. I'll do a top end rebuild on the engine and put new valves in and skim the head.

Unless the quality of the QTP pick up hitch kit has improved significantly in recent years I would avoid it and buy genuine. I remember being presented with 4 QTP kits and not one kit had 2 hooks that were a matching pair. The time spent trying to mix and match bits then modify what was left over made them more expensive than genuine

If the engine is fit and strong why not leave well alone. Just do the manifold bolts, check the hitch, give it a good service then enjoy using it.

If the engine is 'fit and strong' it is probably getting plenty of diesel and is even closer to dropping a valve. Why buy pistons when you don't have to?

Manifold bolts are easy, use a drill to clean the center then a welder to blob them, keep welding the center until you can get a nut over the weld blob and then weld that on. The heat from welding will free them off and then they screw out easy. Taking the manifold off is the only pain in the ass, but I have done a couple with the manifold still on! Replace them with genuine New Holland ones as they are a weird triangle shape stud (y)
