Tm150 exhaust studs sheared

Well, I've finally got round to doing it.
Had one sheared for at least 5 years, now the second has gone so it's been blowing a fair bit.

Amazingly, following some deft clouts with a hammer before trying to undo them, the rest all undone without shearing. So at least I've only the two to sort out.
I'll be spotting some weld on there tomorrow, building it up slowly until I can get some mole grips or even weld a nut on. Fingers crossed please folks.

You seem to have the right idea with the weld and nut. We've done quite a few of these, some with weld as you say and sometimes welding a washer to the broken stud then a nut to the washer. If broken off below the surface we drill a small hole down the centre, knock in a torx bit, and gently work it too and fro till it starts to move and hopefully comes out... Good luck... PS... those left hand thread easyout stud extractor things are the work of the devil and want chucking in the nearest bin!.. although I'm sure you already know that!..

Those easy out things are only any good if you shear it as you're doing it up, absolutely useless if it's sheared undoing or as in this case sheared of its own accord after 18 years of use

I've heard it said it's the TM's that have been opened up that shear the manifold studs... The extra heat causes the manifold to expand and contract more, hence the shearing studs..

Never been screwed open. Had it from new.

Both our TMs have had the studs done. The 135 at around 6000 hrs the 155 at about 4000hrs.

both have been 10mm spanner remapped but not that long before studs let go. Both been fine since.

I doubt there are many TMs out there now that either haven't had the studs done or are in need of them doing.

Well that certainly puts that theory to bed then.... Have a 3170 fastrac here that warped the manifold that much after shearing studs off it no longer aligned with ports and securing holes, although it is a one piece 6 cylinder manifold. Most 6 cyls are a four and a two to allow for expansion.

Well I’ve done 130s, 140s and 155s. They all shear them!! They’re hard buggers to drill out aswell!! As long as lower bolts on 5 and 6 cylinders don’t go it’s not to bad!!!

Hmm:scratchhead:. My 8360 has the same Powerstar engine and has never had the studs shear. 8500 hours and 21 years old this month.
