To blast or not to blast....

That is the question.
I thought I'd post this in machinery forum rather than workshop.
What are the forum members thoughts on machinery that has been shot blasted and repainted/overhauled about resale/value?
Is it worth the time involved or does it put potential buyers off by covering up potential issues
Thats cynic coming out in me!
I've got a set of Cousins 6.2m HZ rolls with tied paint /decals which I'm going to sell.

Its getting a full set of new bearings so in bits at the moment.

I think for the price they'd achieve you'll probably spend more money than the premium the work will attract!

A decent electric car polisher and some Farecla cutting compound will brighten the paint up enough to add another couple of bids

Edit: stick them in the right auction (unpainted), and I'll bet you a pint you get more for them than they cost when they were new.

You won't recoupe the repaint and shot blasting costs,,many say a coat of paint covers a multitude of sins .
Leave as they are ,tarting them up won't increase their value

Leave well alone they look good and honest spray with clean oil and rub over with a rag or polish them your never going to recoup paint and blast cost plus your not getting any benefit

Nice thread, i agree with all the above, those rolls make mine look old. They would make top money as they are, no need to tart up.

Paint doesn’t equal performance, and anyone knowing your kit will know it hasn’t been abused, and proper maintenance shows up to the right buyer.

Bought these for a one off job,they have the decals on them now,I've parked them at the back of the shed out the way or they'll get re disced,I just cannot help myself.

I'd say those rolls will sell well. I prefer to see things in there working cloths as it gives you a good idea of how well they've been looked after. To me they're in good order the paint is reasonable and most of the decals are there which indicates to me they've been put away and not just dumped on the last headland until the next time they're needed.
New bearings will be plain to see so any potential buyer will get a good ideas of what's what.

Machinery like that is too good to re paint. When it's very old and very shabby and you go to town and completely refurb something then it's worth blasting and painting.

I know I definitely spend a load of time playing with new toys, I'd have got bored by now though.

Nice job. New set of discs and you won't ever want to part with them!

If you just want to make it look a bit sharper, give it a spray with a lanolin based product and get rid of the baling twine.

I personally like a resprayed machine if it's done right, but I'll always opt for the tidy, original and more "genuine" machine.

Wipe over with oil, baler twine replaced with cable ties and 1.5m of hose wrap would leave it very attractive to a potential buyer
