But works well in my case as I have the wheels set to 72" for potato work, but duals on at 72' too wide for road transport, so put the back wheels in to narrow up, the fronts then run between

You are relying on the word "appropriate", which I admit I hadn't put enough emphasis on. My example would be 16.9r38 duals vs 800/65r32.

Those 800 32 are hard old tyres , look good but , can you get them down on psi ,with out cracking them up ,
Got 800 vf on and set quite narrow ,only 3 inch to side of cab , and then a big vf rowcrop for a dual , and are a cats wisker under 4 m , and 750 on front ,
Have done a lot of trials on this with phillip wright ,

No if we go any lower the tyres will rub .

My duals rub, I've got 520's on 16.9 size duals, keeps my overall width to a smidge over 3m, literally a gnats cock.
Been like it two years, and I do a lot with them like it, there's no evidence of it causing damage to either tyre, worst thing is they do fill up quickly if it's wet, have had it push the tyres over enough to rub the cab frame once.
