To start drilling OSR or wait

Grounds in perfect condition now to start putting the rape in but ,,,,,,,,,, no rain on forecast , I know I can get my rape germinated through the ground but as we seem to of moved into the CSFB zone it worries me that it will run out of puff and succumb to those pesky varmints !!!!!!'

Wait a bit or get it in ??????

Drilled some of mine yesterday as we were forecast rain for last night and today, guess what. .... ....... no rain. Gone into a lovely tilth just behind a flat lift, but it’s dry!

Finished yesterday though we may have had more rain than you in the past 10 days. Moisture has soaked down to at least 6 inches now. Seed has gone into a lovely moist tilth in the top inch though as you say there isnt anymore rain in the immediate forecast so in 2 weeks time i might be wanting some :nailbiting:

Aiming to start this week but few fields without bale stacks in. Most need a flush of volunteers & weeds spraying off. Anyone else got secondary tillers on drought stressed patches of spring barley?

@Brisel
I had secondary growth here but I've short disced everything twice now and its all gone now.
Don't normally work OSR land but this year I'm sorting compaction out as I'm fed up with bare patches due poor rooting.
So today I'm sat on the subsoiler

Still incredibly dry here but planning to start mid week hopefully won't take long with the vaddy.
Liquid fert applied + Fibrophos or chicken muck(y)

Are you going to drill with the same lines as the subsoiler or cross slightly?

Drilled one block yesterday and today and think I will leave the rest till the end of the week unless we get more rain, what I have drilled has gone into moisture but a week of +20 temperatures will soon dey it out

Are you not using your home made Rapidlift this year @Heathland ? What sort of depth was your compaction?
No not this year its just too hard ,it just raved up horse heads blocks of concret,it as help with the harvest finishing early so I can concentrate on sorting this years rape ground.
10" deep, the DTX won't pull it out at that depth very well lack of ponies,so the lowland is getting the subsoiler at 16"+ a healthy dose of iron.
Are you going to drill with the same lines as the subsoiler or cross slightly?
I'll drill it the same direction,as it will be me on the sprayer/spreader, it will get the short disc over it before it's drilled tho.

I am waiting until the end of the month, as we are CSFB central and have had only 27mm rain recently. Seedbeds will be ready tomorrow night, but will be drilled OSR, winter linseed?? or back into winter barley. Beans seem to have very low margins - they need to be £250 tonne.

Last of mine will be going in tomorrow morning, a couple of fields to roll then done. I went and walked what has emerged and no sign of FB, a bit of slug damage around grass margins but otherwise fine.

Waiting till the flea beetle have gone onto all the early drillers

Also need to finish harvesting the crop preceding the rape is a minor point

The last time it was this dry 1995 we cultivated early August after an early harvest left it rolled down then drilled after rain in early September
10 September planted warm soil and high residual n gave as good an establishment as we got in the 90s

I would not sub till this year on heavy land leaving a line of dry soil that needs inches of rain

Direct drill is the safest when it is this dry and all the subsoiling has been done for free

From my experience over the last three years about now is the peak csfb timing, I’m waiting till next Monday and hope for the best. September emergence has worked for me where mid late August emergence has caused problems
I was taught after 20th August due to the life cycle of flea beetle
