Without trying to sound critical why do you not throw your soil uphill on those slopes? Surely in time it will all end up at the bottom of the hill?
Very good question with hopefully a very good reason for the answer.

Usually we do so maybe 2 out of 3 times. Depends on the crop, the year, the moisture content of the soil and how well we want to plough it for a better Blackgrass control.

For this harvest just gone it was a seed crop of Skyscraper. On paper it looked a wonderful tall, competitive variety that should have given Blackgrass a run for its money.

However it doesn’t get tall or competitive until the Spring, which allowed too much Blackgrass to become a problem, especially as it was ploughed up hill last year, which means the plough cannot bury the seed so well.

So we are ploughing it downhill this year as a “re-boot” scenario.
