I don’t know if it’s a particularly “Australian” thing to do, but we tend to add “Vegas” on to town names as a bit of a joke about them being a big / exciting place
Tamvegas
Dubbvegas
Brisvegas
It's not just an Aussie thing. Next to the tractor factory in Sunny Basildon is the Festival Leisure Park. In it there are all Manor of ways of emptying your wallet. Hotels, restaurants, 10 pin bowling (if I remember correctly) and even a nightclub. Its known rather optimistically as Bas Vegas!
Having been toboth it and the real thing, they are equally loud and awful but America had better weather!

Last of the B & B cattle have arrived. Partly delayed due to dry weather but also the old silage pit was the limex store until a couple of days before Christmas.

They look a nice bunch, dad would buy some calves to rear most years, quite often they were Hereford crosses. I do miss not having cattle about.
They are last years calves. The cows are at his own farm. I miss having my own cattle, but this is the next best way for me. Straw for muck is the valuable part for my soils. There won’t be so much next year though, as they are late coming in, but he has to cut his cloth accordingly.

Nice looking calves. Happy curled up in the straw. My dad bred herefords for many years. Sold a lot of bull to go on heifers in dairies. Back in the days when Herefords we’re popular he exported a bunch of heifers to Sweden. In later years traditional Herefords seemed to be more for novice farmers and ones wanting to supply a butcher with grass fed beef. Nice breed to work with. Some days I miss having to chase them.

Dad's favourites to buy were either Hereford X, or Simentaal X's. I guess I inherited his bias! I remember doing a winter photography job for NH on a farm on the Austria/Germany border. They had some lovely Simentaals, they milked them, with the milk going for Ementaal cheese. I had forgotten that they were a dual purpose breed.
Can you milk a Hereford?

You can milk a Hereford but you they were never great milk produces. Barely enough fit a good size calk. Crossing the with the Friesen fir a black cow with white face was a big advantage in suckler cows/calf units. Supposedly good at turning grass into beef with little to no concentrated food.

As we are talking cows. What would these be?
I spent the summer driving past them every day. There were about 50 or so in the field but they were a bit camera shy and could only get these photos. They certainly looked like a nice bunch, I think they are possibly Shorthorns, what say the experts?
