This is what happens to this country if we don't retain as much residues, stubble or ground cover as we can. Why zero till is the only way to farm here

In the last pick, notice how the foxes have chosen to walk up & down the old tyre track, rather than the soft powdery soil either side

The soil in the above field is that smooth & flat & fine that wind erosion is a problem & rainfall just caps the surface, without infiltrating. So, as much as I hate burning diesel & cultivating, I am doing this to roughen the surface, creating ridges & troughs to minimise the effect of the wind & help the water infiltration

I have been desperate to plant ANY crop or cover into this since August last year when cutworms devastated young chickpeas. Bare soil is an anathema to me - really embarrassing showing these pics to be honest . . .

Maybe not declined, but more extremes & unpredictable. Yearly averages might be similar, but in much fewer concentrated events . . .
Definitely getter hotter though, which is very relevant to evaporation, transpiration & water requirements for livestock etc. More days above 30 C, higher night time temps, longer summers, shorter winters, fewer frosts, plant & animal behaviour changing . . .

Climate change is very real for us here & most farmers are taking it into account these days

Yes,makes you stop and have a rethink about the way things are done and the knock on effect

What a beautiful day out there, perfect for us and I imagine just about everyone else too. This week has been busy, water pipes going in, soils being moved by the trailer load, Boss man running round estimating, blocked sewers being repaired and the office has been on fire. Not literally but this week seems to have been the busiest so far this year! Not complaining, apparently I do enough of that anyway!!

Monday started with an emergency call out to a blocked sewer near Stratford on Avon, our father and some team drew the short straw but soon managed to remove the blockage only to discover a collapsed drain. Had that fixed in no time though as well as replacing the broken manhole covers and frames.

We finished off a new water pipe installation. All was going well until the hedge crossing, there, hidden from view in the thicket, trees and bushes was a gas marker pole. All stop!! Frantic phone calls, requests for engineers and apparatus drawings, even tried to flag down the daily helicopter inspector. A few hours later all was peaceful again, we were about 100 metres from said high pressure main and permission was given to carry on. As a precaution we took it upon ourselves to mark the gas line, think the lads got a bit carried away with the pegs!! Another job done under the watchful eyes of the neighbours.

The machinery parking area is on the final straight, it does look good from an aerial view in the sunshine, even if I do say so myself. The main thing is the client likes the look from ground level as well.

Another hard week lads, big thanks for all your work, enjoy the weekend whatever it is you may be doing. I may pass a glimpse at the Royal Wedding but have a feeling if the sun is shining a cool yard of ale may be in order. See you all Monday.
