Evening RAF, used three years ago, but not in full anger, owner is retired having sold most of his acreage, his only daughter is now converting the Dutch barn on permitted development.
Interesting Job yes, different places, different challenges but dirty work. But a way of making a living, plus I do like a challenge. Plus you find more work and machinery to buy and trade.

Discovered that if you carry the straw bale soaked in molasses to the cows on another bale (300 yards and across a B road) the molasses doesn't drip all over the windscreen/yard/road/passing cyclists.

although it looks like a few drips on the yard right there.

For the first time ever feeding some of the ewes in the field prior to lambing - every other year for the last 30 or more we have had to have them in by now.

Mind you the tracks made yesterday to collect the stiff one show that it is not entirely dry either.

Got the top ram on the digger fixed last week (gland seal kit) and got back into clearing out my little cow shed

Pallets need to come down anyway to be replace or reinstall, the sheer weight of muck had pushed two of the sides out already

Rotagrind but the shoot means that fine particles of straw fly everywhere & I believe the Hay Buster is a better machine in that there is much less chaff flying around but double the price. At the moment, we get a young man in to do it but may be looking to buy our own once we see how this feeds as we would probably need to do 2 artic loads a month esp if we can up the amount the dry cows will eat. Unground, too much gets left as they will not long stems
Do you add water to the ration or a liquid feed? We find wetting the ration helps a lot with palitability.

Don't wet at all simply because it may be in front of the heifers for a few days and not sure if it would remain palatable over time. As for the dry cows, it would depend on the DM of over material going in the ration ie how wet the silage is.
