Grass.

So the forecast was for 10mm post drilling. 2400 percent more has fallen. This is the fourth dry day in seven weeks. It's a bit bedraggled but it's there. Now I have a few months to work out how to turn it into £££.

Might be able to see it was cross drilled too.

Gonna need to up the game with the rats [emoji57] bar stewards have dug through some fresh concrete put down yesterday, even had some broken glass mixed in to try n stop them, [emoji848] now where’s that old tin of cymag
Shame there are rats in that hole, otherwise you could connect up an exhaust pipe for half an hour or so to "speed up the curing time"

More progress planting today.

Ground conditions surprisingly good!
All drilled up now, wheat and beans. Planted extra with a view to halving reducing spring barley acreage.

First time ploughed in 15 years. Turned over lovely, dry and crumbly. Should reduce blackgrass pressure from later planting and ploughing too.

Looks good. I personally doubt it will be as big an issue as some make out but aren't you worried about ruining your DD soil structure? What do you normally use for establishment?

Not worried at all. Quick buzz with the plough followed by single pass combi drill - no worse than anything else imo. It’s not like it’s bashed the life out of the soil or such.
I think the soil having had a break for 15 years undisturbed has probably done it the world of good, hence why is came up so well and so dry. Can’t see I’m going to undo that with a single plough/combi use. If anything it may even help things-who knows!

Normally just seed in one pass direct into stubble with Horsch Sprinter on Duetts.

In 2012 I planted very little and regretted not planting more so wasn’t going to make that mistake again.

We’ve had exactly the same. Plan A got abandoned long ago.

Think we’ve probably has 6” rain since mid Oct when we were rained off DD on 10th Oct.

Had two big rain events that have flooded the fields out in the last week or so, but it’s surprising how well it drains away on undisturbed land. Took the tractor out last week to try some slug pelleting and made 12” deep ruts in some parts of one field.

Contractors who came to help us out were surprised as well. Said there were plenty of acres up by them not touched at all. Not seen many fields round here planted either.

Came back up to the midlands from Somersetlast week, and as we got to climb a bit towards the Cotswolds the oh said ‘I don’t think they’ve had anywhere near the rain we have, look at all this sown ground, wish ours looked as dry’!

Certainly looked like that to us especially south of Cirencester

Annoyed a whole lot of twitchers who were all standing looking over the gate at some cattle egrets.

As the cows all assumed that I had come to feed them and they stood in the way of the long lenses.
