Finally got to the last of the trees that came down in the last storm. Big oak that smashed through 2 fences, one running up and down the hill, the other a perimeter fence at 90 degrees. No way to get to it with machinery so myself and the Tirfor winch were working at our limits, warning buzzers going off all the time and a few rest breaks as my heart was pounding with the effort. The root ball had to go somewhere so I reckoned the best place was back in its hole. Now just got to decide how to deal with the trunk.

Wish I had a pound for every cube of concrete that went in to this and still can’t work out what it’s for
Then a very long train load of bottled water when past to go through the channel tunnel

That day of the week we all strive for and this week has been a rather happy, smiley and gloriously sunny one at D W Clark Drainage.

Well except for Monday!. . . . at around 06.15 I had a phone call from Boss Man Chris asking if I had a spare key to the office, why I wondered? Well, his key had snapped and the spares were . . . in the office!! Thankfully other spares were available, one with Boss Lady Jeanette who is an early bird and the other with our Accounts lady. Boss Man Chris had to do an emergency run back home to get a spare, but we were all up and running again by 07.45. Not the best start to the week but thankfully it did get better.

King Kev, Cool Hand Luke and Paul have been hedge bashing again this week. Looking very clear now and the client is more than happy with what we have achieved so far. Thanks to Adam Shirley for lending us his grab which fits our Steelwrist. Been a massive help to say the least and saved us a lot of time and effort cutting branches and loading trailers.

Besides the hedge bashing King Kev and Cool Hand Luke finished off the water pipe connection for the local cricket club. A new connection was made from the 110mm mains we put in a few weeks ago with an Electro Fusion saddle clamp fitting. We also fitted a new stop tap in its existing buried chamber as well as several metres of 25mm pipe and a new meter in a chamber.

The lads spent Tuesday back at the golf course finishing off the deep dig drainage. It was one of the shallowest parts of the trench but on the steepest part of the hill and as I mentioned last week, the wet weather made it a tad too wet to get purchase to safely dig. All done and dusted now though just in time for the ground staff to get the greens and fairways ready for the upcoming golf tournament season. This has been a lovely job and lovely people to work for. Thanks to all at EVG golf club for the works, hope to see you again soon.

The highlight of the week though was yesterday when Boss Man Chris and Boss Lady Jeanette took big wheels for a run out to collect our new 15:15 drainer from DR Swain and Son. It arrived back safe and sound and was quickly surrounded by 5 blokes who some how managed to turn into 8 years old with their new Christmas pushbikes! There was a lot of oooing an arrring along with some “what does this bit do?” “What is that bit for?” “Give me a lift dad I can’t get on the seat.” (Yes, that was me). As you would expect, everything is relatively standard, but I learnt yesterday that our new machine has a part that is unique to this machine, well in name anyway. This drainer has a “f##king bar!” I do not jest; it is a bar that stops the drainer when raised and won’t allow the machine to start until it is in place. Rumour control says that every now and again there were calls of “Blimey this drainer won’t start” and “I do wonder what on earth is wrong with it now, why has it stopped, the flipping thing.” Followed by a shout of “Check the f##king bar”. I am sure we all would remember more if all safety features had “special” names that we understood what they were for and how they worked.

Again, we must thank Chris and his lads for the drainer, Dilly Bob was on it like a fat kid in a biscuit factory when it arrived and after an inspection that would embarrass a forensic scientist was smiling with comments of “What a nice bit of kit.” “Been well looked after.” “Bugger me that’s going to take a lot of polishing”.

Dilly Bob nearly lost it yesterday with the new machines, he even “fasted” for an hour whilst looking over the drainer. Have no fear though folks he was back on it this morning, even more so as someone had put the last packet of Malted Milk biccies in the tin!

Been a great week lad, thanks as always for the graft and the giggles. Sun is meant to be shining this weekend so enjoy and have a good one. See you all again on Monday ready to rock and roll, till then stay safe and stay smiley.

Its a shame evg dont spend more time learning how to farm properly instead of digging up the golf course
