I worked in Derby for a couple of years . You never heard anybody there calling them Rolls Royce , it was always referred to as just Royce's . Mr. Royce was the actual engineering brains behind the company . Mr. Rolls was just the money , and as such was not even in the reckoning . Very pernicketty firm to work for by all accounts . I stayed with a chap that had worked there . He said that the foreman might , say , give you an item to polish , and would allocate 2 hrs say for the job . At the end of the allotted time the foreman would examine it , and say "Yes that's coming along nicely , just give it another 2 hours" . He said he thought it was perfect after the first hour ! Mind you, their contract with the Gov. didn't encourage thrift . They were on a "Cost Plus" contract , which meant that if they could spend £1000 on a job , then their profit was £X , but if they could still justify £2000 on the same job , their profit was double at £2X. The company I worked for used to sub some work from them . One job I remember particularly had the same spec sheet as it would have had for some high precision engine part , and it was for a turnbuckle for a workman's cabinet door . Must have cost a hatful of money and the item could have been bought at just about any hardware shop for a couple of pounds .

We went to Portsmouth today to watch HMS Queen Elizabeth return home after four months of sea trials with the new F35 jets.
