Told off by the bank

So how does a PINSentry work? I can see how a random number could be generated quite easily
But how does your tablet know its the right one when you manually enter the numbers to authorise the transaction, or how does the PS know you are entering the right numbers from the bank generated system, to respond?
Because I'm not aware that they are a Bluetooth device or a GSM.....
Witchcraft I tell ye.

Pretty sure it’s based on an algorithm. The generator is designed to churn out random numbers which match a specific pattern. For simplicity’s sake, all even numbers, containing either a 1, 3 or 5 as their second number, all numbers add up to 22. That type of thing.

If the number meets all of those “rules” and hadn’t been entered before, then it’s valid.

No different than having a password you give to someone….but instead of it being “Apple”, saying any British grown fruit would do. Or instead of being “pendimethalin” any one of the million actives available which are safe for use only on wheat would suffice. If someone tried to copy it and said “glyphosate” you’d know they were lying.

It’s a small box you need either a special card or debit card you slot it in to produce a new security code every time you login. Guess I’ve had one for 10 years

You surely don’t need to register that? I’ve got four or five of them somewhere and use them randomly along with my wife. They can be used by anyone anywhere and are not a security issue and are not registered to anyone at all. Not to an individual and not to an account. It is the credit and debit cards that are secured and registered not the number generator.

This is the Rabobank token we use every time we log in to online banking

Well there you go, every day's a school day. Never seen one, Mrs KP tells me they have them here too but not that common. I take it its similar to them texting you an access code?
I do find online banking a great tool, can't remember the last time I actually went into a bank, must be years ago. They've done away with cheques here now too, which I don't have a problem with.

haven’t been into a branch for years. All our banking is electronic, online & direct payments & debits. No cheques. No cash. It’s great 👍
If I have a problem or want to talk to someone, I have my own personal “relationship manager” who I can contact at any time, i have his office ph number, his mobile number & his email address. If I want to see him face to face, I can either go to his office or he will come out here. No problem

Its the card that is registered. I guess the reader has an algorithm specific to the bank in question.

The banks are shocking these days. I had a row with mine so threatened to remove my account, adding that I would need it in cash (not that there's much but at least there's something). Next thing I had a visit to inspect a horse I had for sale! I suppose I should be grateful for the personal attention.

In years past, the bank charged me for going over drawn. Then they made an accounting error (pre-computer). I promptly sent them an invoice for my time in checking their work which, coincidently exactly equalled the unauthorised over draft charge. The manager refused to pay. I replied that I'd see him in Small Claims! My account was very promptly credited! I've used that precedent since with go results. Sauce for the goose, etc.

Don't forget the barstewards work for us, especially when we allow them the privilege of investing in our property and businesses. It used to particularly gall me that the manager would take me out to lunch to discuss my overdraft, then charge me for it. I can't remember much discussion about high finances but for some reason he always wanted to know the value of the gundogs in my kennel. My reply was always the same, "What make of car is he driving?". Or in farming terms, P.O.A.
I am sure I remember someone telling me, they had a disagreement with their bank, and during the discussion they said "I have a cheque for £500 000 here, what do you want me to do with it? Should I deposit it with Abbey National?" , the bank answered yes, so he did!

They are just employees on a weekly wage and it isn't their money, why should they care? I changed banks last August but I never got any statements (current and savings) from the new bank. Finally, sat down and wrote a letter, then another. Both ignored. Got in the car and visited face-to-face. "Oh, we don't write letters!". I am now getting statements for my current account but none for my savings account. Time for another visit I think. I left them years ago after being with them for 40 years and never even got a "Thank you for your business".

I've a little calculator thing from HSBC, I'm told it works on an algorithm, input my six figure number and it returns another number to use, it's based on your number and the time and date, which is how it's always a different number returned.

When the last one went flat the bank wanted me to change to an app arrangement on my mobile, I refused because half of the time I've no idea where i've left it.

Different bank sent out a letter asking me to set up a 'challenge word' so if anyone should call from the bank and don't know the word it's a scam call.
the phone number given to do this has a message 'we're having great call volume at the moment, someone will answer shortly' for three weeks I've been trying and still no-one answers the bloody thing.

Damn near impossible to find a bank here now, have to go to the "city".....ffs🙄

Binkleys bonk rang me the other day saying that they needed some more information so that I could continue to use my account to buy stuff online . I told the gentleman that I do not discuss my banking details over the phone with someone that rings me out of the blue and to send me a formal letter through the post. A few days later the letter arrived and it appeared genuinely that something has changed to ramp up security. However, the final line in the letter said if 'you do not contact us to update your details we may close your account without further notice', what a nice way to be treated after being a customer for in excess of fifty years.
