I wonder how the animals are doing on Tonga if they are outside along with a covering of ash ?, I believe they get some/ all their water from collecting it from roofing, can't see that working if there's ash on everything, they're not mentioning it on the news.

It dominates the news in NZ.
Both NZ and Oz are rushing water, food and desalinisation plants via their navies and air force to their islands. Big aid schemes currently being put together. More Tongans live in NZ and Oz than in Tonga, so big connections exist.
NZ horticulture and food processing heavily relies on temporary work visas from Tongan workers.

I know nothing about the area but I'd have thought there will be cows/ goats or pigs ect for milk and perhaps eating, but if they are graizing or foraging that'll be off the menu, not a good position for the locals if they don't have feed put aside for them.

Just imagine one of that magnitude happening in Iceland ? There was one in Anglo-Saxon times that caused what was known as the ten year winter and famine. It would make the one that stopped air travel a few years back look very tame. There was a volcano erupted in Iceland a couple of years ago that had been dormant for 800 years, so anything is possible.

Guess if there were any more really big ones on the Reykjanes peninsular, there could be a fairly large bow wave heading down the Irish and North Seas.

536 AD apparently. And for the next 10 years crop failure and mass starvation on the planet.

""A mid VEI 5 would make Hunga Tonga’s explosion one of the largest since Mount Tambora’s VEI 6 back in 1815, which resulted in ‘The Year Without A Summer’ during the Dalton Minimum (1790-1830). It would also rank it just behind Pinatubo’s large VEI 5 blast of 1991, which is thought to have cooled the planet by approx. 0.5 to 0.6C.""
