Top marks to scottish govt.

"Tenuous grip of history"?

If your giving out a history lesson, then you've forgotten to mention that the Act of Union (1707) was brought about a by an ambitious Scottish Government who had sought trade and influence abroad by sending 3000 men to the Darien region of what is now Panama, and creating the colony of 'New Caledonia', with its capital : 'New Edinburgh'. It undoubtedly failed due to the embargo ordered by King William, and the disastrous choice of starting a colony in a malarial swamp.

Of "the Scottish people who were never asked", more than 2000 of them were investors.

"The disaster helped end Scotland's independence. For the colony had been funded by public subscription - an early example of a financial mania.
Public bodies, town corporations, members of parliament, landed gentry, and thousands of private citizens - sea captains and surgeons, apothecaries and ironmongers - sank their life savings into the scheme.
Between a quarter and a half of the available wealth of Scotland was spent, and lost."

And the real lesson from history?
- don't support a tin pot 'government' that can't deliver on its promises.
Anyone who wants to know more about this subject could do a lot worse than reading 'Darien' by John McKendrick. A good read and well researched. Just finished it.

55.3% voted to stay in U.K., 44. 7% voted to be independent. That is percentage of people who bothered to get off their a**ses and vote at all (84.6% of the electorate voted). Not accurate to quote percentage of Scots who voted to stay or go if you don't take into consideration the % who didn't vote at all.
Also it shouldn't be said Scotland voted to remain in Europe, 67% of the Scottish electorate voted altogether (62% remain, 38% leave) but 33% didn't vote at all, we could assume they didn't care either way? Sorry about the long winded post but it annoys me when people say Scotland are getting dragged out against our will - 71% either wanted to leave the eu or didn't care!
FFS, 84.6 % is an incredibly high turnout.
If you are going to add all the non votes to one side arbitrarily, you could invalidate every single vote in history:eek:

I didn't! I said they either wanted to leave (38%) or didn't care (the rest). Although if I had put that, is it any different to the way Scotland is said to have voted to remain (a lot didn't!). Generalisations rule ok?

So britain voted 52% leave but 30% didnt vote so lets add them to the 48 % remain and just cancel brexit ?
