Top of the Litter Pops......

Today I finally summoned the will to start something I've been meaning to do for ages, have a clean up along the verges that border the farm. And after managing to clear just under a mile of verge, and collecting 8 bags of rubbish plus a pile of larger items, I thought I'd compile a Top of the Pops for litter.

In traditional reverse order, straight in at No 5 it's Builders Waste. Some kind tradesman has taken it upon himself to use the verges here to dispose of all manner of waste from his jobs, mainly it seems unwanted cans of paint thrown into the hedges and ditches. A broken bathroom basin was also found, plus one lone engineering brick (unused). Also a 10 foot long steel pipe, 4" in diameter. This will actually be useful (y)

At No 4 we have General Plastic Wrappings. Mostly crisps, but all types of 'on the go' foods were well represented. Oddly enough the poster boys for litter, the fast food outlets were surprisingly low in number, possibly as they mainly use cardboard and paper in their wrappings, which rots quite nicely., especially when chewed up by the verge flails.

Rising up to No 3 we have Glass Bottles. All alcoholic as well, ranging from beer to wine to spirits. As everyone knows, driving is hard work and requires a constant input of alcohol to maintain concentration.

The top 2 were very close, it was nip and tuck all the way, but the final count put Drinks Cans at No 2. A mixed bag of everything from cheap beers and lagers to soft drinks, and a surprising number of 'energy' drinks. Which is not surprising, throwing all this rubbish out of your car or van does take it out of you.

And the Number 1 in the Litter Hit parade is Plastic Bottles. The previous No 1 manages to maintain its pole position with an impressive display of littering range and quantity.

Special mention must go to the remains of a satellite dish, and a car battery (which will get me £5 from the scrappy).

Just another mile or so of verge to cover......................

We have a couple of spots that a local likes to use to chuck out Stella cans and those little silver laughing gas bottles that seem to be the rage nowadays, also empty backy pouches and long rizzler paper packets, now I wonder what they are smoking in those roll ups 🙄 we know fine well who it is but proving it is another matter 😡 no local plod to have a quiet word with but if it carries on we will be having words

Well done you, My nearest road is an unadopted lane but is busy cut threw, both sides of it are regularly littered with cans, packets and newspapers clearly thrown from cars. Then there's folk who pull up and dump bags of garden waste, junk or worse still nappies  one wonders who and why!

Most unusual and for the past couple of year some individual had been taking the time to place thier empty brown cider bottles over twigs on the hedge almost as if they think they're discarding them in a good way.🤔

We all do a bit when we have a moment but I had to smile one morning when I saw the retired doctor walking back from his dog walk with a load of empties under his arm 😂

An annual event here for the last 35 years is the Estate clear up day, we make a morning of it by pairing up into teams and then having lunch afterwards

It is really depressing though, that we seem to pick up more and more each year 👎

Top of the pops here is Costa, McD’s and either energy drinks or beer cans with the odd sex toy thrown in for light relief ( gloves needed for that 🙈 ) and there’s always a suitcase full of something...

The general public are scum...why would you dump your crap out your car window just anywhere and everywhere.
the sooner there’s cctv absolutely everywhere and these yobs are fined £100 per littering the better
Trouble is in this country there is no penalty for stabbing murder assault ect in relation to the severity of these crimes so cant se them being any deterrent put in place for litter , unless or until we get a proper right wing law and order hang em flog em gov , which is what's needed, to draw a line in the sand with these scroats that are out there !!!😤😤😤

If you littered and the police saw you you would get an instant fine...so if there was cctv everywhere and people who dumped crap out of their car were fined they’d soon stop...out driving today and the amount of fresh McDonald’s litter on the roadside was disgusting

My team were out today so the roadsides round here will now be spic and span for a day!
I think all fast food wrapping should be bar coded to tie up to the card that bought it and they could then be charged if it picked up as litter.

We found a 12 in pink dildo outside the local riding school one year!

We farmed on the edge of a main road, in addition to all the above except the battery, we had the contents of a chemical toilet emptied . Not nice when you come across it on a ride on mower

That is disgusting :yuck::yuck:

One new thing I've noticed on my road is bags of p*ss. Or what I assume is bags of p*ss, its a brownish liquid anyway :wideyed: Someone is for some unknown reason taking a leak in a plastic bag, tying a knot in it and chucking this out into the hedge, rather like those bags of dog poo one sees hanging in bushes where dog walkers congregate. Why for goodness sake? Are people so divorced from nature they can't take leak behind a bush any more? Is this a new 'thing' or am I just unlucky enough to have the Phantom Pee-er commute to work along my lane?

Driving back from work tonight, noticed a crappy wee car sitting in the school car park at the bottom of the road. Two occupants, interior light on. Had cause to drive back down ten minutes later. Car gone, leaving takeaway boxes lying about. Judging by the amount of similar rubbish in the vicinity, this has become a regular haunt for the local scumbags to scoff their fast food

I did a lot of thinking while hooking bottles out of the ditches as to what could incentivise people to stop littering, and after I'd fantasized about knee-capping the culprits, my conclusion was penalties don't work, as you need evidence to fine people and catching people in the act in country lanes is very difficult too. There's no point having draconian laws if they can't be enforced. I favour the method of taxing the cans and bottles and plastic wrappers highly at point of purchase, and then giving some of that money back when the item is recycled or disposed of correctly. Thus meaning a van cab full of cans and wrappers actually represents money, so is less likely to be thrown out the window, and indeed if it is and I pick it up, I can get the refund money. Thus meaning picking up litter would be a source of income for kids etc. Its a win/win, less incentive for the purchaser to throw litter away, and more incentive for everyone else to pick it up if it is.

I did a mini litter pick on the main road just the other day. Costa cups and McDonalds wrappers are the most common with an assortment of bits of car trim thrown in for good measure. Found a massive telly and most of a motorbike once.
A few years ago I was working in a field that borders the main road, it has a gateway and a layby just next to each other so finding little gifts is quite common. My son was with me at the time and he could see what looked like a big tub left in the corn. He hopped down out of the tractor to investigate and with instructions not to touch anything, moments later I can see him waving at me and laughing. It turns out that some delightful builder character got a bit desperate and took a dump in the tub, but what was making my son laugh was that the lack of paper meant that he'd had to wipe his arse with a huge carpet tile! Kept him amused all afternoon thinking just how it would be possible!

If they had deposits they could be given to the homeless aswell when people are in town, but I don’t think anyone’s allowed to say that as it would be frowned upon.

I seem to pick up a lot of relentless and red bull cans.

New drive thru Starbucks has opened up the road. The opening of which was "an event". Number one litter item down my road now Starbucks cups. Road was shut a week while water pipe was connected - much less crap. Needs to go back to being a gated road (not possible, says highways) so will remain a DPD ratrun full of potholes and rubbish. Dirty barstewards the general public.
