Topping grassland

You beat me to it Neil....

I have bought a new Malone specifically for mowing herbal leys with a 5-6" long stubble and it came with 3 topping skids to aid this. I reckon they are OK on billiard table surfaces, but I was advised by the malone rep, that for rougher land, I should fit a full set, "as the Irish lads do" to preserve the mower bed when topping. I also run a long top link.

After 30minutes on the ley, I was on the phone chasing down another 4 skids, which I found at Border Plant near Sandbach (thanks Steve!!) They transformed the ride on the bed... no more rattling and shaking!

I have subsequently used the Malone for topping, and the flail and the rotary moweres can stop in the shed now... Flail will be used on heavily BL infested areas still, but it is slow and power hungry, the Malone tootles around at 1300RPM on a whiff of fuel and leaves a grand job amd the stock tidy up nicely.

Does it lift and cut the wheelings?
Yes it’s not bad but it is the 6 blade model for mulching up what it cuts. Each blade has an angle on it to create a sucking effect as it goes round to lift the crop before cutting. Possibly better on front of tractor but it’s a lot better than the major we had previously when you left the field it looked good but the next morning all the wheel marks stood back up,and it looked a mess. Tbh prefer spraying rushes etc tHan topping but we have some land in a scheme where we have to cut 25% of it annually.

Not as yet... @Classichay suggested taking off the swath disc, and that will be done as it serves no purpose when I ted out quickly.

Yep on eco as you say. go all day on a drop of fuel then. Quiet and less stress on the mower drive train.

I use mine with 1000 PTO and tractor on little more than tick over, to give around 570 rpm on the mower.
And have you found that to that save much diesel?
I ask because running at low revs on load can use quite a bit of fuel, a bit like driving the pickup in top gear with a trailer on where the fuel monitor is oftenshowing poor figures, but drop a gear and it's often more economical.

I run at 1300-1500RPM giving around 400RPM at the PTO. Fuel gauge hardly moves... but that is hardly scientific I agree. :)

Surely it's hardly under load with a 9' disc mower, raised up by the topping skids, and only cutting a few straggly bits off? I would use 540E if there was any volume of stuff to cut.

Yes or sprayer, can you get a weed wiper other than a tractor on that you can drop up and down without getting off the seat , on a ram

Cannot be beyond the whit of man. I am pretty sure Edlington could make something, mine is 3PtL, but I had the optional trailed subframe as well for going behind small tractors or a quad. I imagine a ram either electric or hydraulic could be used to lift the boom up and out of the way somehow...
