Leaf damage is similar to the striping that slugs do but smaller in size so I would also go with leaf miners. Wireworm and frit fly can devastate the first two cereals after grass. Have you had many corvids on there as that is a sign that you have grubs?

Osr has worked well here as the first crop after old turf. The following wheat was then ok.

In the early 90’s I rented some land which was ph 5’s and had been down to grass for decades. It was a pig to get right but chemical control of the above pests didn’t sort the problems out. Layer manure gave the crop a help with ph and balanced nutrients, as well as making the ground a bit “hot” for the pests, so that has not been forgotten. I have to use it again this year to try and overcome a nematode problem but that is on different ground.

You will overcome the issues but unfortunately there isn’t a quick fix. Checking the ph and feeding the soil to correct nutrient deficiencies will take a few years to iron out all problems but it does pay off. My fields are now on their 27th crop and have done well since those early years.

There are a considerable amount of slugs about at times, been tempted to pellet just to see what happens, but also aware its getting a bit late to do that now that the ears bursting :cautious:

I’m going to continue, but then not much choice, as just taken the farm on and don’t have any knowledge of livestock ( other than they taste nice ) not convinced DD was the right choice at the moment, but was a good option at the time, I like the principle, just not sure it’s going to work here. I have had 50 acre if it ploughed now for Spring Barley and Beans as it’s just wasn’t drying, will be interesting to see how that goes
How are the Barley and beans growing ?

Not been the best year to start on DD, even where it’s green the flag leaf had rolled that tight it could hold a pencil.
Looking like a poor sample and grim yield from what I’ve found examining the ears [emoji57]
