Total stupidity

Talk about stupidity? Did anyone see useless Eustace being interviewed at the Devon County Show claiming that farmers have nothing at all to worry about as although the Aussies etc will be sending bucket loads of beef over here our people will simply not buy it because it's not up to "our" welfare standards!
How do these idiotic prats ever get chosen by local associations, surely having at least half a brain should be a requirement, how proud his local Cornish Tory association must be!

Its inexcusable but generally the shift from ring fenced "self sufficient" units to farming operations that span the length of the county with one large factory style store or livestock unit, digester or grain store in the middle hasn't really helped at all on many levels including the need for much more road transport and fuel usage. A failure of strategic planning in my view.
I live next to an A road and it's very noticeable now that there is a contact stream of Ag traffic carting :-
Water for sprayers,
Manure,
Straw
Grass silage,
Fertiliser
Seed
And thousands of tonnes of grain in the summer.
All in tractors and trailers.
Really the goods should be carted in HGV's burning DERV if we are going down this industrial farming route. It's stretching goodwill and environmental credentials to the limit. Net zero by 2040? We seem to be going the other way. I really can't see how it's that financially efficient either. All of these drivers are being paid, tyres and machinery are wearing away for something that was not required till things got big and spread out. Seems mad to me.

Yeah, if there was money in the job, we'd all be using these.....;)
Trouble is, it would seem from above comments that they’re not considered good enough by vosa and as such straps are still needed.
Might as well stick to a flat bed and use straps then..........which is where the bloke who’s the reason for this discussion went wrong

The load should be secure such that in an over turn it stays on the trailer
No excuse

death or serious injury by dangerous driving is a prisonable offence

straps cost under£10 and if looked after last several years so cost is minimal to the extent that the time saved recovering one lost bale pays for the straps

Its an aside but it seems wholly inconsistent planning policy that if you build three houses you need to do a traffic impact assessment yet you can build a huge grainstore / digester / livestock unit that is more or less guaranteed to fill the the roads with slow moving traffic burning loads of diesel and its waved through.
Shouldn't planners be encouraging the retention of ring fenced units with their own storage rather then converting them all into holiday lets and having the land farmed by some business that hauls everything in and out from miles away? Its going all the wrong way from a sustainability point of view and I am not sure there is really any economy of scale over such long distances.

Hopefully vosa would look on you better with such a good trailer but they would be within their rights to say the load should be secured so in a rollover the load should stay with the vehicle.

Yes, know what you mean.
I wouldn’t like to guarantee that every time I go on the road everything I do would stand up to the scrutiny of a vosa inspection but I’d like to think I could allways argue the point that I’d done my best/ what I thought should be sufficient

Yes as long as people like in the op are around I would think it would have to be a pretty slow day at vosa for them to pull me up.

But next thing you know, the entire trailer is on it's side on a roundabout......on top of a car...

I see lorries and trailers with mechanical sheets to cover the load but I fail to see how these would keep the load attached to the vehicle.
Stops bits blowing off perhaps but that's about it
Yep if a tipper lorry full of stone tips over there is no way the sheet is going to keep the stone in the lorry, so what's the difference with that and a trailer with sides and the bales coming out the top if it goes on its side
