Towing stuff about in tandem

I've never really seen the advantage of one of those self-propelled chippers versus simply building it on an existing truck...

Yes, this is actually cooler. CBI chipper on the back of a Volvo. Can't go wrong. Better crane also.

I was more thinking a Swedish chipper mounted on a Swedish lorry. :sneaky:
So an even cooler option is a Bruks chipper.

As an aside I'm not sure about having a second dedicated engine on the chipper when it's on a lorry, unless it's noticeably more powerful than the truck's of course..
Otherwise it just seems a bit redundant to have a dedicated ~750hp engine while the trucks own 750-770hp engine is sat idling...

The one in the picture doesn't have its own engine for example.

hydraulic drive to a chipper or the actual truck is phenomenally expensive in power, possibly 30 %

The rules about towing 2 trailer, one full, one empty, date back to when dairy farmers wanted to take their milk churns to where the lorry would pick them up. Many farmers had a tractor with a fore-end loader and a transport box on the rear. It was deemed illegal to have both the loader one the box filled with churns going down the road.

I had a situation many years ago towing a loaded straw trailer behind an Manitou MB25P rough terrain forklift with an empty flat 8 grab on the front. Even with mirrors, I couldn’t see past the trailer to see any traffic behind me. I’d stop wherever I could to let them by, but a relatively straight road for about 2 & 1/2 miles with no where to stop, caused a tail back. So I eventually stopped just past a right-angled bend to let them by.
There was a school bus driven by a ‘Blakey’ type character, wearing a Beret hat. He pulled up beside me and stopped, blocking all the cars behind him from getting by. He opened the passenger door and said “I don’t know who you are, but you are braking the law. You aren’t allowed to have a loaded trailer behind you and a machine on the front.”
I told him that he was wrong, provided that the machine on the front wasn’t loaded..
“Well who are you?” He replied.
I said “You’d better bloody find out!” rammed it back in first gear and carried on down the road for another 2 miles before he and the other cars could overtake!
The school kids were pissing themselves laughing! He never did find out who I was, even though some of those kids knew me!

You'd never power it by oil though! Just imagine the size of that radiator for a 750hp engine!!
There is no problem driving by oil We had a 450 hp hydrostatic chipper working in South Norfolk thinning woodland. Not that it was without problems but they were to do with cavitation issues
not my machine I hasten to add!

Surely if you have second engine on chipper itself the lorry engine is then stopped? I suppose all chippers are now on white diesel too now

We had a outfit the same as that but with a jenz 700 chipper
Tried all way to run on red but the dvla are pansies who cannot understand their own rule book
Ridiculous is there anything any closer to mobile plant? Going to be some interesting discussions in the coming months. The Unimog I posted earlier is run on white, not worth the potential hassle if pulled running on red by the wrong man. They've never been stopped in it either.

I'm not certain but I think he's saying it OK as long as you have breakaway chain on ??? Does anyone know the true meaning of Evenflow videos ?

As far as I understand it we had a bit of chain you attached to the first towed bit of kit so if the pin or drawbar breaks it cant run out of control. much like a brake-away wire on a cow trailer should put the hand back on if the trailer drops off the towing vehicle. Much like the red suzie line on air brakes, if it snaps the spring the brakes come on as an emergency brake away system.
But putting in that hat well you can risk it if you want.

Former contractor got pulled by the police for a ministry check, towing two trailers, no problems and sent him on his way, weeks later same place, different policeman and different ministry man, looks in the back of the trailer and finds drums of silage additive, tells him you can't carry a load and give him a ticket.
