Briefly , renewing fathers driving licence, on line you lose c1 and d1 entitlements which are vehicles between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes which wouldn’t really make a difference as can still tow trailer up to 3500 kg on the b,e part of licence . If I apply by post the entitlement stays so I’ll do this but I am wondering if I did do online and lost c1 and d1 how would pulling grain trailers with tractors work ? Weight is well over?
The paper way is the way to go but I just thought I’d ask and highlight it in case . I think a eye test or medical maybe required if it goes further . Has anyone come across this issue?
if I can do it online and not lose tractor pulling trailer it would save hassle of medical etc .
thanks

The trailer and weight limits you describe don’t apply to agricultural vehicles.

Ag towing is covered by B license. Some ag towing eg with a telehandler by the B+E.

C1 and D1 are small lorries and busses. If you renew and keep these you’ll probably need a medical?
If you never use these entitlements it’ll be easier and cheaper to give them up.

i had to have a medical (and bleddy glasses) to keep my 7.5 ton licence.......did not want to loose anything that was able to drive.....not sure about 3.5 ton .......dont think it would affect tractor licence as it is a different category.......got form from post office, medical and glasses ,photo copied old licience as proof if any cockups and sent it off.....medical every 3 years

Basically to maintain the 7.5 tonne entitlement on your grandfather rights car licence you need an HGV medical, which has to begin with the opticians report. - Shut during lockdown.

Next comes the Doctors chargeable medical examination but then Swansea reject all that if you have some other complication which would affect the HGV side but didn't matter for the car (grandfather rights) licence , such as diabetes type 2 and its back to the optician for a different report and then needs to be signed off again by the original Doctor.

I began the process which involved my first photocard licence in early June 2020 and eventually got the photocard at the end of October.

Covid didn't help but allowed an extra year to sort things out so I've effectively gained three months on my licence ..
