Anyone who has a vehicle serviced by a dealership probably has more money than sense, perhaps the same can be said about those who buy new.. My Ford Ranger's last service was £269 including MOT and VAT and I consider that plenty expensive!

I don’t know how they justify it.fuel, air and engine oil filter.new engine oil and gearbox and axle if you lucky. And that’s about it.door hinges may get a squirt of oil and vehicle probably washed too.licence to print money really.probably not much more than an hour either.just to get main dealer stamp in book that next buyer wants to see.my builder mate has an Isuzu truck that had first service recently.his brother took it in to be serviced over night.collected it next morning and looked round it and nothing had been done apart from getting a huge bill.brother is ex truck fitter.there was a lot of apologies going on and money was refunded and next service is to be free too.id have reported it to trading standards but mate let it go.id never trust any of them and mark everything too.this was a main dealer in our city too.

Many brands now include a year's roadside assistance and recovery cover as part of the service. Don't know about Toyota.

The price of £330+VAT sounds like not too far off for a major service on a pickup. My be a bit salty for the standard annual interim service though. Beware that it might need brake pads and wiper blades on top and they might, if they are pushy, try and foist you off with rubbish like engine flush, a premature brake fluid change or anything to raise the invoice value. Resist!
Wiper blades and pads are cheap at motor factors. Flushes are cons, as are fuel additives.

Think that's dear a friend has just had his tractor [i know its not a pick-up] serviced by main dealer, cnh 7-210 they collected it drove to depot 7m drove it back, just short of 2k!!.

I change oil and 3 filters every 5000 miles at a cost of £ 23 and I am looking for another vehicle at present
I do not want any warranty so that rules out dealers
If you want your warranty to be covered you will need to have book stamped by dealer when serviced

I don't know what vehicle you have, but if it is fairly new you should be using a synthetic oil which with 3 decent filters would be more than £23. Can you tell us how you get it to £23 please?

On my two cars they reckon I should have the brake fluid changed every 2 years. I think this is rather excessive, what do you think Cowabunga?

I've got a BMW, VW and a Defender and they all need a different spec of engine oil. If I take them to my local indie they will use what they have in bulk (whatever they tell you). If I go to a main dealer at least while they are robbing me they will use the correct stuff. When I had my first service on the BMW I managed to get 10% off! Next time it needs a service I will go the Hughes Bros who specialise in BMs and Mercs. The VW goes to Sunset who specialise in VW and Audi. I do the Defender myself and use the proper 5W/30 synthetic oil, not the JD Plus 50 11 and I buy a decent filter like Mann or Hengst.

I get all spares and lubricants from trade supplier and using multi grade oil but next time using synthetic cost could go up to as much as £ 30
I should add that I found out by chance that my pickup performed a lot better if I kept engine oil level just
Above min mark and not up to max
If I took to garage to service it would come back up to full mark

Every four or five years has always been sufficient for me. Never had an issue.
Some dealers try and push 'air-con' services. The air-con is totally maintenance free and only needs topping up when it stops working. It's a 'con' alright.

Compared to a tractor, it sounds like the deal of the century.(y)

You do not need dealer stamp for warranty purposes. That legislation was changed many many years ago. Any certified garage stamp will legally cover your manufacturer warranty.

Only if they use the correct parts, ie if it's a Toyota you have to use Toyota parts and the correct oil. When my car is under warranty I go to the main dealer, it makes things better if it breaks down. (Although I realise a Toyota never goes wrong)

You do have to use either correct branded service parts, or at least correctly specced by manufacturer.
Do check, they will try and void warranty otherwise.

do your cars really need different oil? The books will quote a vw spec, bmw spec, lr spec, but I’d be surprised if one oil spec didn’t cover them all. that’s assuming they are all diesel

They are all diesel but the VW needs a 507.00 oil, something to do with cam lobes. The BMW needs a 0W/30 and the Defender needs a Ford spec 5W/30 oil. If you look them up on the Shell or Castrol sites they spec 3 different oils. I could just put the same oils in all 3, but why take the risk?

Just type in the reg number on Amazon and it finds model and parts. Oil and fuel/oil filters £75. 5w 30 c3 synthetic oil. To service our 65 plate hi lux.

I run bmw and vw myself. Normally use quantum as the local VW dealer sells it at a good price

it covers bmw ll04 as well, so does my bmw. With 0w-30 in the bmw it would use a litre every 7000 miles. With 5w30, no need to top up between services. Granted, I do shortish journeys so change every 10000.

im not up to speed on the later bmw specs
