Toyota Hilux or Isuzu Rodeo

Hi there,

Need to rapidly replace my land-rover discovery before it goes bang apparently - cost me a fortune over recent years so looking to spend a bit more this time (on the initial outlay - not the repairs) . Found a couple of trucks I would like to view over the next couple of days.....

One is a Hilux - 06 model 2.5 D4-D, 95k,

Other is Isuzu rodeo 2.5 TD Denver Max - 12 model, 52k

Both same price and distance from home.

It's use is definitely a work truck, off road and about 100 miles a week ish of towing 2 tonne ish and daily up too a tonne. Doing about 10k a year.

Apologies if this has been done before but can't find direct comparison. What are people's opinions on these as a truck and the milage etc they are coming with for same price. Not completely discounting the l200 either.

Thank you.

The 06 2.5 Hilux is one of the best hiluxs ever I have one with 290 k km on it and very little trouble , it does a lot of off road work and gets plenty of abuse . What price are they .

That's what I had heard, so wasn't sure if the higher mileage and older age mattered as much if they were a better truck? Have read a few people have had little trouble and have done really high mileage.

Both on for £9500 incl vat it seems on both.

The Hilux will be still going when the Isuzu is gone , is that the Izuzu model with engine trouble , diesel getting into the oil.
No idea - that's what I'm asking for really to see if any known troubles like that as after having the land-rover off road in the garage numerous times I really need reliability. Glad to hear you have got on with your hilux.

mk5 d4d highlux, check the gearbox has been fixed, and check engine serial number on toyota forum.
they had cam and piston problems..
Any hint of jumping out of 1st gear is a £1000 fix, not sure yet how much engine will cost

For the same money I'd definitely go for the Isuzu. It's six years younger and almost half the mileage of the Hilux. There are literally dozens of them around here and they seem to go on forever. Btw it's the early Dmax Isuzu's which sometimes have the fuel in the sump probs not the Rodeo.

I am a Hilux fan, cannot see past them, but the Hilux is far too dear. £8000 plus vat is a lot of money for that age and milage. My 08 plate was £13500 plus vat new for comparison, so if it was me I would either negotiate the price down by about £3500 or buy the Izuzu.

We had an 04 or 05 d4d hilux. Absolute shed. Seat was really uncomfy parts were really expensive and it made folk sea sick towing.
Think it's only a 2t towing limit as well

Secondhand higher end mileage, i wouldn't look at anything other then hilux the rest are just not as good.
Hilux were better than the rest twenty years ago but there's little difference now. Our local mechanic always used to run a hilux but has an Isuzu now. He reckons they're all on par now. He sees them all in his workshop from time to time.

Isuzu Rodeo every time.

Especially with such a low mileage.

I have no idea if Hilux is better truck (and would argue it probably isn't) but a Hilux can't be worth the same money for six years older and almost double mileage.

I am now on to my 2nd rodeo and love it.

My truck works very hard as I do not have a tractor or a bike, and my Mrs rarely gives me the car keys. Rodeo has to do everything, and I think does it very very well.

Hi a few months back I found myself in the exact same situation my trusty td5 discovery commercial was needing a lot spending on it. And had managed to persuade me Mrs to let me swap it,(y) , I had my heart set on a Hilux based on there reputation and fuel economy. But after a lot of looking around I could not find one under 10k with under 100k mileage. So , started looking around and looked at a isuzu rodeo found one from crg nichol in York, and bought it feeling abit dissapointed as I hadn't managed to get a 3.0 litre invincible. But 6months on and 10k miles I don't regret it one bit, I was concerned about it being gutless but seems to have plenty of grunt low down for setting off with a full trailer. It does 35-36mpg on a good motorway run, and down to 27-28mpg towing. I find it comftable and feels like a sturdy work horse so best of both worlds. My advice would be go for rodeo as toyota is over priced as the rest of market have caught up. Hope this helps.

I have a 53 reg Hilux, and while not much has gone wrong mechanically, corrosion is appearing. Had a new diesel tank, and I've painted the chassis to preserve it a bit longer, but the holes appearing in the load bay are getting bigger now too.
That Hilux at 06 is only 3 years younger. ... I'd go for the Rodeo
