Toyota launch LandCruiser Commercial in 2018

I will not be waiting for anything, long or long long.

And I was being sarcastic about the seats... I wasn’t suggesting they were going to delete the seated version, merely that if the commercial version failed they’d continue to make the normal one. Like I said, it’s an opportunistic release, almost seems like an after thought. If it doesn’t work, they’ve lost nothing and will return to declining sales to caravan owners.

I think Toyota are losing the plot a bit, they seem to be getting left behind.
The pickups have been out sold by Ford for a while here and most of their car and small suv sales are to the hire fleets.
If I needed a pickup I might buy one but I think there's just better stuff out there now.

First Land Cruiser with full time here was the 1989 or 90 Land Cruiser [Amazon] 80 series, followed by the 90 series [similar to the commercial that is the subject of this topic] around mid 1990 I think.

The main advantage of LR's system is that it retains an open centre diff in low range, whereas Toyota lock it.

.

Correction to what I posted above.

The Land Cruiser 150 no longer locks its centre diff by default when changing to low range. Not sure when that change [for the better] occurred and it might be from late 120 series production or from the start of 150 series.

This is the home page [which is what you've linked to]
Then you press 'New Land Cruiser' which takes you to 'Build your Land Cruiser". This takes you to this page. Click on one of the two top avatars which takes you to the utility versions. Odd thing is that they are listed as five seat models when five seats, as I understand it, doesn't qualify the vehicles to commercial vehicle status. Not unless they can carry a ton, which these can't. So unless I'm very much mistaken these do not qualify for full VAT rebate or 100% tax relief on purchase.

There must be something I'm missing here. :scratchhead: Or Toyota have made a balls of it? Which is it do you think? :nailbiting:

Done all that, I was right. Commercials don't appear on UK site (yet). Icons are for the utility spec passenger version. Price is higher than stated for the commercial model too.

Remember to deduct the VAT from those prices. I haven't done so and I'm not able to calculate what that is with any accuracy, but does that bring the price closer to the expected?
How many of those 'Utility' versions have they sold in the UK do you think? I've never seen one. Surely the only difference between the utility and a van version will be a darker tint on the rear windows and the non-supply of rear seats?

There doesn't appear to be much price difference between the utility and better spec, so unless the VAT can be reclaimed, its no wonder that I haven't seen any with steel wheels around.

These Utility spec are also the only 5 seat models. The price varies by £20k if you go for the Invincible model. Click on the 7 seater icon, 3 specs available.

Price is similar if you remove the VAT but the commercials are a few £'s more.

All the info is here http://pickupand4x4.co.uk/toyota-land-cruiser-commercial-2018, but still not on Toyota UK site

I reckon that the commercial price is at least £1000 more than the passenger utility version before VAT. That is daylight robbery. The profit margin must be substantially higher for the commercial compared to the passenger carrying utility in that case. They could be importing the utility version and stripping the seats out of it at extra cost of course, which is not sensible, but possible.

Apparently that's what they have been doing for years in Ireland anyway.

Its crazy, LR do it too. Commercial used to be the cheapest option. Now slightly more money for the D5 Comm due to the fact they have to remove everything they've just put in, then board it out and block the windows.

Surely if the order says 'commercial', they could just say, Oi Fred, "Leave the rear seats out of that one" :banghead:

You dont have to carry a ton to be a commercial, an escort van was no more than 550 kg, its the windows that count.

Hmm. I'll refrain from Irish jokes.

Just why can't they just order them without rear seats from the factory? Its surely not rocket-science.

They have been doing the same with vw golf's and ford focuses etc here in Ireland, still a good bit cheaper than 'car' versions because of the vrt tax we have here, I think ford have stopped selling the focus vans but you can still get golf vans.

Yes you should refrain from Irish jokes and go ask Toyota. I'm just giving the facts. Maybe the Irish market wasn't big enough to justify a global giant like Toyota to make a particular spec just for them?

They didn't bother with the UK at all until the recent announcement. It will probably be a tiny market for them here too, because I've never even seen one with steel wheels, 'utility' spec, around.

Tunnel vision.
Anything that's not a Land Rover is ugly!

You must have me confused with someone else.

My 4x4 history:
SWB Patrol
SWB Itchipusi Shogun
SSangyong Musso (straight 6 3.2L petrol Mercedes, ridiculously quick).
SWB 3.0 Trooper
3.0L Hilux
3.2L Ranger
If Ford release the Ranger Raptor in the UK with the (rumoured) Mustang 2.3L Ecoboost engine (310hp), that will be next :)

I drove a neighbours 'new shape' 2.4 Hilux last summer, it was kinda like my old 3.0L, but with all of the fun kicked out of it. Joyless and dull.
And the Landcruiser commercial, with the 2.4L, the pee taking price and the f'ugly front, whats the point.
