trace element requirements in young lambs

i use the cosecure pre lambing and ive never come across a regurgitated bolus yet, is it long since ye found them?

I used them for a couple of years pre-lambing and I didn't find any either. I only had the problem with their lamb boluses. I only moved away from CoSecure for the ewes as the price was 20% more than the alternative brands.

Ok if you insist. But I suspect I'll be wasting my time.

So, what have we learnt about boluses over the last few months? They're a ball ache to administer, some are some aren't
you'll probably kill the sheep in the process really? Or perhaps there may be the odd death. Certainly unaware of any here. That's quite different from 'probably kill the sheep'
, they're expensive compared to what?, they spit them out there are documented issues with 1 brand
and even if they don't, they still don't do the job! Most people find they do - presuming they were needed in the first place....May be it's time to take the blinkers off!.......Still, it's shows the power of marketing if nothing else :ROFLMAO:!!!

So yes I think my analysis of your summary was fair and balanced:)

Got my Mayo order today, so super fast. I like how small the ewe boluses look and the gun seems sturdy enough. I haven't opened the lamb ones though, as I suddenly realised they have copper in. I thought sheep weren't supposed to get copper unless they were specific breeds? Or are lambs different?

It's some breeds can't, texel's can't have copper.

So without reading the whole thread

1) blood test
2) see what they are lacking
3) bolus according to needs rather than drench

Is that correct?
i would get some livers tested too if you can on lambs being killed only down side of that is early lambs are the best growers and maybe able to up take mins etc better than later lambs (if that makes sence )
older ewes if tested maybe lower due to how they uptake mins as well
so worth doing older ewes if hanging any up bloods may not be a full pic of whats going on
best way of thinking about it
bloods are you wallet and liver or storage sites are bank account wallet shows how much you have to spend to day livers how much you have to use other days

That depends on deficiencies. I know of quite a few Texel flocks that have to supplement with copper. Plenty round here running TexelX ewes and have copper buckets out a lot of the time, to counteract molybdenum levels.
My own (Highlander) flock has a good dollop of Texel blood in it, yet need copper supplementation to achieve anywhere close to their potential.

Texels are just better at assimilating copper from their diet than Suffolks or most hill breeds, but that doesn't necessarily mean they don't need supplementing.

Mostly texel x ewes here and they get copper caps and the lambs all get micro boluses with copper in them.

Got the chance to ask Trevor Cook about this at a QMS meeting just after we came to our new place. He suggested testing some spring grass to get some idea about mineral levels, then following that up with with blood tests on some ewes pre-tupping. Turns out we're short of cobalt, copper (high molybdenum) and selenium, so everything supplemented on that basis.

I only really got to the bottom of our problems after testing soil, forage and bloods, to get the full picture. As I have posted before, I was actually losing lambs with copper deficiency, which were showing as having reasonable copper levels in blood tests (it was unavailable due to molybdenum locking it up).

But am I right in thinking the nettex ones only provide for 25 days anyway? I'm new to bolusing (usually nettex drench) but more tempted by the 120 day cover of the smart trace..... Guess it depends on growth rates & cost...

Its the fact that you can give the Nettex/Mayo ones to very young animals. The Smartrace say over 25kg and they are plenty big enough to get down their throats then. I think I need something ( based on bloods only) to help get mine to 25kg! Preferably ot creep - hence buying Mayo.
