Tractor flotation Tyres

Definitely would go for proper radials, 800 or 900. The way the weather is these days there will always be a market for them and won't lose much value. Terra and tanker tyres aren't great, don't wear evenly or grip well.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. I hate making a mess as well especially if it's in sight of a road! [emoji1]

Ok thanks. I'll get sorted out with something.

Sorry to be a pain in the arse but how do u work that out?! [emoji23]
Worked it all out years ago from tyre size tables when the contractor I worked for at the time was putting bigger wheels on. He had a New Holland 8360 on the same size tyres as you have now. First change was to 650/65r38 and 540/65r28. Then 800/65r32 were bought for slurry, power harrowing and drilling. For his second year with the umbilical he bought a pair of 71-47x25 terra tyres that were nearly 4ft wide. Now he has 1050/50r32 for spreading.

Ah I see![emoji1] I've got a pair of 480/(65 or 70) R28's lying here. So I'll try n find a pair of 800/65/32! That would be a nice happy medium I'm sure[emoji106]

The michelin 800 65 32 at £2000 on ebay look good value if they're in good condition, as in not sliced or cracked. Don't get too hung up on tread depth as will last for ages doing pipe work

Yeah true, don't really want anything more than 50% tread really as it'd just cut in more than in needs to.

What tyres are you thinking of? Russian type tyres, such as 28.1x26 tanker tyres, give very little grip. Terra tyres don't give a lot of grip either and you'll be relying on your front tyres to pull you through on umbilical work. Couple of contractors running 1050/50r32 round here, widest I've run on were 800/65r32. 800s were good compromise between flotation, grip and overall width. Even used them to bale in wet years
friend of mine ploughs on land with terra tyres has plenty of grip

as in avatar, fitted 850 x65 x 38 rear 750 x 55 x ? front. drilling at 5 psi front 6psi rear with 3m combi and 8 row maize which weighs 3ton empty. on damp ground they will keep you up beautifully but there come a point when no matter what width tyre you will go down. motto is if its that wet shouldn't be out there. on umbilical they are great but depends on what length drag pipe the longer it is get to appoint where you lose traction so you need more weight on tractor. tyres I fitted are trelliborg and came with rims. 3 meter powerharrow sticks out 3 ins each side . wheels were made by brocks tyre and wheel specifickaly to be less than 3 meters.

Yeah I was thinking they'd be handy for cultivation top work, not that we do that much but when we re-seed a grass field they're a bit bumpier than I'd like due to tractor compaction. That's what I thought about the umbilical, when u go to do the 2nd half of the field u can get a fair pull on sometimes and maybe struggle with grip with the wide tyres on? Can't have it all ways I suppose![emoji1]

yellowfrog, those aren't old style flotations (those big goodyears with the width in imperial)but decent wide tyres
yes I agree. I had a set first of all, but found them unforgiving, designed to support large weight at quite high pressures. treads tend to be large and flat and on grass it was like having slicks if it was wet. tomake them grip I had to ballast the tractor up defeating the object. had these trelliborgs on tractor (nh 7.200)2.5 years now . do a lot of drilling in spring ,rolling reseed grass, fert, then onto 7weeks of maize drilling then back to fert on silage grounds after harvest on ripping up stubbles and drilling up to nov . so I don't haven't taken them off yet.

Hi,
I’ve just stumbled across this old blog where you refered to an old boss using 71-47x25 terras.
I’m using the same ones on our fert spreader tractor at the min but one has a bad leak!
They are the old Russian type and we’ve been persevering with them for a while now. Running them with tyre sealant inside worked well for a while but one has had it.
Any chance you know if you’re old boss still has them? And would he be willing to sell.

Cheers

How do you get on with the wheel studs and nuts with those wheels ? I put a set of 850rears and 750 fronts on my t6080 last year for drilling and one day one wheel nearly fell off . What torque do you tighten your wheel nuts to if you don’t mind me asking ?
