Tractor found parked up ‘with its engine running and no one in it’

A tractor was left running and unattended while its driver was in a nearby shop buying lunch, a local police team in the UK have noted, highlighting the risks involved with such an action.

The unattended tractor was discovered by members of Dorset Police, outside a Tesco store in Blandford Forum, in England, last Thursday (October 15).

Taking to social media to highlight the matter, Dorset Police said:

When we visited Tesco’s in Blandford we didn’t expect to find a £110,000 [€121,800] tractor parked up near the entrance with its engine running and no one with it.

“We soon located the driver leaving Tesco’s with a meal deal.

“There’s absolutely no reason to leave the engine running in these circumstances.

“Quitting is a fineable offence; we would like to raise awareness to the risks of doing this. To prevent thefts, accidents and injuries.

Imagine, if someone had taken it, the damage they could have done and the risks to everyone isn’t worth thinking about.

The police force said that, while there is no excuse for his actions, the driver wasn’t given a fixed penalty.

Explaining this, Dorset Police said: “The driver was out of sight of the tractor, which was running for several minutes.

“When he returned, we pointed out the risks to him; he now fully understands the consequences so under the circumstances he was given words of advice.”

I think it is an offence to leave any vehicle unattended with the engine running, to be fair. No doubt someone reported the incident and the police attended, as they are duty bound to do. For goodness sake, don't let's start slagging off the cops for doing the job they are paid for simply because a farmer and tractor were involved!

Oh dear, I leave my tractor running unattended almost daily, whether on the mixer wagon, slurry pump or whatever. Should I be put in the slammer? If the tractor was stolen, they wouldn't even try to recover it or prosecute the culprit [should he hand himself in]. I know that because I have the experience from a previous life.

So you leave your tractor running in a public place, and would even in front of Tescoes? And your insurers will pay out if something untoward happens?

Can you please give me their contact details as I think I would like to insure with them!

If the police are to be criticised for doing their job it is small wonder they don't bother to turn out for farm thefts or a bit of hare coursing. I believe the expression is, you can't have your cake and eat it.

Must admit I don't take my tractor out shopping.
So you think the police have an excuse for not tackling serious crime such as theft. Hmm. It's no wonder the country is going to pot. I blame the older generation. The hippy generation who think that police time is well spent on trivial pursuits and to use that as an excuse for not dealing with serious crime. I blame the psychedelic substances ingested that possibly probably resulted in long term cognitive disfunction.

Unless a bad starter, and if stopped blocked road and would of given cops something to do then?
A tractor once conked out on me, blocking the main coast road. As the queues built up and as I waited for a tow tractor, the police turned up from both sides. They were OK but quite insistent on sending for a recovery company, which I told them in no uncertain terms that if it turned up after my brother, they personally would be responsible for paying the recovery company's bill [instead of getting a commission!]. Reluctantly they delayed and within five minutes I was towed by my brother to a lay-by.

I would say no-one reported it as the response time wouldn't be good enough for the plod to get there before the driver got his sandwich bought. It was probably noticed by plod who were hiding in plain site in Tesco's car park eating their donuts and drinking their coffee out of Tesco's deli as around here there are more police in the local Tesco's than in the barracks.

They have a four to six day reaction time here unless it is a 999 call that is prioritised. That's if they turn out at all. It's usually just a return phone call with the same sort of timeframe.

So you cannot tell me the name of your insurers who are apparently quite happy to pay out for any losses you incur while breaking laws you do not approve of?🤣

Edited to ask if you will kindly cut-and-past where I said the police have a legitimate excuse for not tackling serious crime such as theft as I can't find it. This short term memory loss is pure hell for us of the older generation!;)

Left my car in the car park to walk into town and passed a RR standing with the engine running. The angle I passed and smoked windows meant that I could not see the drivers position. I just assumed s/he was getting ready to leave. Came back an hour later and going in the opposite direction I could see the drivers position clearly and it was empty and the engine still running.

Push buttons. It never happened when you needed a key.
