Tractor Leasing.

Hi All.

What would the general cost for leasing around 1200hrs a year?

It’s become a lot more expensive recently but sub £11/hr is still achieveble if doing 1500hrs per year. Basically the hire companies want circa £16k per year return on a 160hp tractor so the more hours you do the more cost efficient it becomes.

I presume you mean 6215R? Is £28k/yr for the one tractor? Could almost buy one for £28k/yr, albeit servicing to go on top.

You could but don’t forget a tractor that size will probably depreciate between £10-£12 per clock hour, so on 1500 hours per annum it could depreciate up to £18000 a year

Out of interest how come you hire?

Sorry for being nosey

Feel free to ask anything - I reserve the right not to answer anything too personal :D

It was more to do with my employers preferring to keep the balance sheet smaller. Can work out cheaper for high hours tractors and has the security of backup in the event of major failure. Fully tax allowable.

Not so good under 1000 hours per year when ownership becomes cheaper or you’re happy to take more risk.

I hire another for 10 weeks during harvest too.

Ultimately it’s down to the deal at the time and the attitude to flexibility and change in farmed area. I can see why contract farmers on short term deals prefer to hire.

Looking to change a tractor here in next few months. Seriously considering leasing instead of purchase. Seems a bit more cleaner and flexible then owning. Lease the wife's car as well and that works well.

I only ask as I feel this is probably the way I go with my main tractor. 2 reasons really I run a small number of tractors 2 over 2000 acres and it works well, but we did have a 2 week breakdown without any real backup from dealers (330hp went down and they lent me 130 hp) so in a tricky year I could have seriously lost out. Also cost of new is frightening and as you say flexible for bigger or smaller next year depending on area increases or not.
At harvest I do have a neighbour I pull in for corn carting on long hauls but luckily most of mine are short tip and go scenarios.
