Tractor Road Licence.

Aye-up,

it’s probably been asked before, but how do we apply for a provisional licence for my lad?

DVLA website has us going round in circles and, although we can’t really make it out, it seems he can’t apply until he is actually 16. As with most kids, he wants to take his test on his 16th birthday!

What’s the score? Best we can see is that he applies for a provisional moped licence and maybe the tractor is included?

Cheers, Pete.

Now Then

Just wondering if there is such a thing as a provisional licence for a tractor at 16 . I don't think a sixteen year old can drive on L plates.
I remember buying a set of L plates to take my test at 16, but I have forgotten long ago what licence i had

Since I posted this my people (oh yes, I have people. Well....... a person. Well.... a wife!) have been on a webchat thing. It seems you just apply for a general provisional and the tractor licence is included along with the moped licence entitlement.

Seems a bit daft and there is absolutely no mention of the tractor entitlement anywhere.

you only use L plates for your test believe, you drive to meet the examiner at pre arranged location .If you fail you still drive back home again

I don’t no if you still can but when I applied for mine I put the year wrong on my date of birth waited until the card came Then said there’s been a mistake and got the correct card sorted and sent for my driving

But I’d kept the old card as the most perfect fake ID a 16-17 year old would ever want

3 years ago Charlie did his tractor test about 2 weeks after his 16th, you have to make an appointment in advance.
It would be difficult to do the test on his 16th birthday
From memory, you apply & then they come back to you & ask for a suitable date & venue to meet. (Village pub car park in our case) don't forget simple things like a small enough tractor, wash / wipe working, all lights working, L plates & I think proof of insurance. Learn the Highway Code basics too.
He did his car test theory on his 17th, had a double lesson on his 17th too & was told to apply for a cancellation, which he got 15 days later & duly passed. The quickest his instructor had ever done.

When I applied for my test, I suggested an appropriate venue on the application form, which sped up the system a bit. From memory, I turned 16 on the Monday and had (and passed) the test on the Friday. That's a fair few years ago now, but it sounds like the system hasn't changed too much.

He’ll be taking the test on The Best Tractor In The World as he calls it!

I must sort that intermittent side light!
