Tractor Size on 16t Grain Trailer

Thinking of upping our grain trailer size; the increase in spec to bring it up to date / future proof it and accommodate big wheels and brakes etc mean the base weight will increase 1.75 tonnes from what we're used to + 2.25 tonnes of grain. I'm telling myself that decent rubber on the trailer will usefully reduce draft but don't want to find we're embarrassed having spent £18k on a trailer. What are people routinely happily pulling 16t (21-22t GW) trailers with allowing for some sensible slopes? Thanks

On the flat 8 hp per tonne (16t trailer = 128hp), more comfort 10hp per tonne = 160hp add in serious slopes or wanting to do 50kph and 180-200hp needed. We are pulling 16t Kane on 560 tyres which are easier to pull than super singles. Loads vary from 14.5t barley to 19t muck in the trailer, trailer is 5.8t empty and tractors from 5t to 7t

As said above my comment.

Tho 160hp should be a good all rounder.

Think a lot of it depends how many flashing beacons a cb arials you have on it. Another thing that seems to figure highly is whether the driver feels the need to wear sunglasses even when cloudy. / dull. Not forgetting a number plate with a highly amusing nick name.
From what I've heard locally if you have all these "extras" 150hp will be more than enough for 20 ton

Agree 200hp , this side of the border used to be so much better than your side but things are detraining this side as well (n)
Aye it's taking the enjoyment out of the job now beyond a joke you can't drive along the road even with an empty trailer and not be stoting about. There is grass growin in middle of some B roads here now :mad:
