PS - there was NOTHING soundproof about AC cabs from 1970’s era Cats, never drove it without ear protection

You had a cab at least the air you breathed you filtered by something other than your nose. I went to the States expecting to be driving nothing other than Steigers and articulated John Deere’s but spent a lot of my time on tractors from pre-historical times with no cabs and often just an umbrella to keep the sun off.

D6’s with cabs and AC what a bunch of big girls. When I was on a Rice/Tomato farm in California I had to land plane with a D6 with no cab. I think I’m still getting the dust out of my nose now and I’m still shaking and deaf.

I drove a D4D for a bit, the noise wouldn't have been so bad with no cab, fecking gutsy engine though

If you google it there is an official harvest student farm placement scoring system. I will post it to aid the understanding of farmers everywhere.


Basically, you need a minimum of 20 points to accept a job offer but 30+ is the target.

Has Valtra +5 points.
Has Fendt +4 points.
Has JD +3 points [if fridge is present, 0 if not].
Has Quadtrac, JD Artic or Xerion +10 points.
Has anything else minus 5 points.
Has anything else without CVT transmission minus 10 points.
Grainstore has leaf blower in it instead of brush +5 points.
Has Kramer telehandler +5 points.
Has loading shovel +10 points.
Has Volvo loading shovel +20 points.
Has caravan/mobile home with wifi or ethernet connection +5 points.
Has pornhub subscription +10 points
Has microwave in caravan/mobile home +5 points.
Yard is within walking distance of pub +5 points.
Possibility of being allowed to drive combine +10 points.
Possibility of driving baler +5 points.
Possibility of ploughing +5 points.

You got an umbrella?! Ha! Luxury! We'd have killed for an umbrella in my day. I bet you had a duffle coat for the winter too.... utter extravagance! We were so hard done to we only ever had hessian sacks. Wrapped one round each leg with baling string and a bunch up top to keep us warm... We had it proper tough... not like these young 'uns today... don't know they're born....

I'm being silly, couldn't resist joining in I'm sure I've heard my parents talking about sacks for keeping the tractor drivers warm in their youth though. I do remember one farmer saying he was doing his early spring work in his duffle coat on his tractor with no cab, and the youth on the posh tractor next door had his sunroof and back window open and had taken his shirt off because the sun was out.

Tractors it’s all relative. If you’ve spent days on a Nuffield with cage wheels whipping dust and grit into your eyes then even a John Deere 6930 is acceptable.

Then there's those of us who were incorporating burnt stubbles with Bomford Turbotillers sat in Duncan cabs on their 30 series John Deeres back in the 80's

And slightly off at a tangent: The old Claeys 103 combine with the dust coming down the elevator trunking & into your face. If you very really lucky when combining barley, there would be a tail wind blowing barley awns down your neck. I once had the misfortune to have a barley awn work all its way down to the nether regions wheupon it wedged itself in the end of of Percy - bloody sore I can assure you.
