Tractor trailer brakes?

Hi All,
Can my Marshall 802 have trailer brakes fitted? or set up in some fashion
my issue is I need to move tonnes of cordwood so firstly I need a good-sized trailer 6/8 tonne
and am a bit worried for the legal side of things with the "brakes" I have looked at 3.5 t trailers with override brakes and I know they sit up high o the tractor hitch leaving most of the weight on the back axel and also there not really big enough for what I want, any ideas how I can get up and running with this problem?

I’m glad you asked because I have been wondering the same thing today.
It may be a bit astonishing but I have never driven a tractor and trailer with brakes and don’t know how they connect or what to.
Do modern tractors not have brake valves as standard? My 09 Same Dorado has lots of fancy kit but not aware it has a brake connector.

me neither, done miles and miles carting hay, muck and logs with a little 3/4 tonne tipper trailer, but I'm told it's over 750kgs and it's against the law,
As far as I'm aware there is a valve on the foot pedal then piped to the rear spools, just plug the trailer in and off you go

Plumb something like this into the system... have seen valves in the past with solid linkage activation the brake valve in proportion, such as when the brakes are operated by rods direct from the pedal as opposed to fluid.

Dorado will certainly have a Trailer brake coupling or will be a weird non UK spec tractor and most probably fitted with air brakes!!

It is a F100 (orchard tractor) so possibly falls under the weird non UK spec bracket. We also have a Same Iron 130 and wouldn’t know where any connector is on that but not very familiar with that tractor.
I asked at a local tractor dealers today how trailer brakes work. They told me they all have air brakes. I asked if that included the smaller 2wd version on their yard. Apparently that one doesn’t so you just plug the brakes into one of the spool valves and leave it on constant flow.
Obviously I am a bit of a muppet regarding trailer braking but that sounds bollox to me.

The Dorado variants usually have the TB coupling (a flat face male coupling) either next to or above or below the free flow hydraulic coupling. Usually left hand side of top link bracket from memory.

The Iron trailer brake coupling IIRC is just below the 7 pin plug or down by the toplink bracket depending on hydraulic system.

Hydraulic Trailer brakes work by means of hydraulic cylinders on the brake rods on the traile, when you brke with the tractor the brake circuit on the tractor will activate a brake valve to pump high pressure oil to the trailer circuit if connected to tractor. Easy test if tractor has trailer brake valve is if the engine labours and hydraulics strain when the pedal is pressed it has trailer brakes.

You're quite correct in thinking it's bollox on their part.

There should be one of these on the Iron, perhaps with a plastic cover and light chain over it......

This is my solution to trailer brakes on a tractor that doesn't have a trailer brake valve.

It's just a trailer brake fitting screwed into the standard half inch male hydraulic fitting that I plug into the tipping pipe or spool valve.

Yes. It takes a bit of getting used to and takes a gentle touch but makes a big difference. When pulling tandem axle, 8 ton trailers with our David Brown 996 I don't touch the tractor brakes at all, the trailer will stop the tractor.
It would be better to fit an adjustable one way restrictor/ free flow return between the 1/2" probe and the brake fitting. That way you can restrict the amount of oil going to the brakes (even if you hold the spool to full pumping). The oil would flow back to the tractor, unrestricted, when you let the brakes off.

Definitely none on my Dorado, just the hole where it would go.
I think there might be one on the Iron, couldn’t get the cap off to see. Don’t need it so didn’t persevere.
